Hi, could do with some advice please.

About a month ago, i bought a 3 year old mare. The mare was covered just before a bought her, she had her second scan yesterday, and we have a heartbeat.

This mare was half starved to death in March, and is now looking much, much better. So do i leave her along, untill after the foal is weaned. Or do i start to lightly back her? Then give her a break while she foals etc, then start her again after weaning?

Opinions please guys? Thanks.

I would leave her hun - as in the first 3 months if you cause her any stress she could reabsorb and lose baby !!

you could do some in hand work with her though - put bridle on etc xx

Yes i know what you mean, might just do that and see how she reacts. If she takes it all in her stride, then do abit more.

Thanks.

My friend had a very similar scenario to you - she did quite a bit of groundwork just like Stacey says and made sure that she was totally comfortable with the basics. She played loads of games with her, generally handled her lots and then left her to it to play mum!

I'd leave her be, baring in mind as you stated she was half starved in March, so even if she was not in foal, I'd doubt she be in the best condition to doing huge amounts with her anyway but also now she's in the early stages of pregnancy.

I'd just spend lots of time handling her making sure she's in tip top condition for when her new arival comes, then once you wean the foal you can start fresh with no interuptions or indeed distractions.

I would concentrate on groundwork, bitting, fitting a roller and lunging lightly or long reining and just keeping her fit and well. All that handling will help when the foal is due, in case any intervention is required.
