Arrrgh!

Fourth rug this winter came in absolutely destroyed today! I'm ordering another, but can anyone recommend a recipe for something to paint/spray on to try and put the rug-biter off?

Crib ox seems to smell of a mixture of lemon and fairy liquid... chilli oil has also crossed my mind.

Anyone got a good recipe that works?

Thanks and advance!

I would also be keen to hear some responses to this as I have a similar problem but mine is constantly eating his bedding! We can only really dispose of straw round here without huge costs so don't really want to change to shavings, and hemp is really really costly. It's never really been an issue until this year and he is eating probably about half of his straw every night, to the point where he seems to sift through the wet stuff to get to it! He needs to drop some weight so is only on about a block and a half of hay, and is on very little hard feed just so I can mix in his vitamin supplement.

My worry is that he seems to have very low standards so wouldn't want to spray anything onto the bed that could cause him to colic or anything if he did still eat it!

I dreamt about it the other night (yes, sad I know...) and I was spraying his bed with vinegar!!

I had this problem last year and found a mixture of salad dressing and chilli sauce worked. The other horse liked the smell licked it and never ripped the rug again!

I have a gelding who eats tails! So far, he's munched his was through Crib-stop and a mustard and chopped chilli mix without flinching... We've now started spraying our other gelding's tail with Dettol and this seems to be keeping Mr Tail-chewer at bay..... he really doesn't like the smell of that. Does tend to make the yard smell like a hospital though :D

If he gets used to Dettol, we're moving on to TCP!!

Chilli does the trick, we had a gelding who would rip his rugs off at the chest area, we tried anti crib stuff etc, that didn't work! so I used mashed up chillies and mixed it with sweet chilli sauce and painted it on! Sounds a bit mean but it did work and he stopped doing it within a week.

I sprayed my boys bed with dilute detol and that has stopped him eating it.

Nettex do a 7 day anti-crib Gel which is pretty good to stop rug ripping.

to the poster that wanted something to spray on the bedding, try detol but otherwise have you considered using wood pellets. I don't use them myself but Know people who do with success.
