What to put in ad and what info to give.

Ill be careful as my last as got removed (grr)
Anyway what should I include in an ad when selling my boy? And what should I expect to be asked or shown when on a viewing?

any notable blood lines

how he is to hack, load, shoe, clip
stable manners
what he is like to ride (e.g. responsive in the school, quiet, etc.)
flatwork experience and ability (e.g. works in an outline, good walk, etc.)
jumping experience and ability (e.g. jumps 1m at home, fast against the clock, etc.)
General temperament
any vices
type of home that would be suitable/is required
open to vetting, good trial facilities, etc.
price
 
I've never sold or bought anything, but when looking at ads (habit of mine!) I like to see -

Name (personal preference!)
Age
Height
Price
Breed
and anything that you think they should know. For instance, if I was selling Ned (I really hope this doesn't get your thread pulled, I AM NOT SELLING NED!) I would put

Ned
15.1
Standardbred
Gelding
14yrs old
A good, one person horse, who needs time and understanding. Gets his confidence from his rider/handler. Can nap, but if you catch it early, he's very easy to push through. Can be ridden alone or in a group. Loves jumping! Once you get to know him, you'll love him!


I hate the words "not novice ride", unless you go into detail about what makes it a tricky ride. I've seen ads that say how wonderful and foot perfect the horse is and then it goes on to say "not novice ride!" well, why not?!

Sorry for the wee rant, it's just a pet hate of mine :P

ETA: I second good photos! Another pet hate is when there's a picture of the horses face and nothing else, or out in the field (if it's a ridden horses). I want to see it doing it's job!
 
Yes - I hate the 'not a novice ride' phrase as well. It used to be code for 'is a complete nutter under saddle' but now it seems to be in almost every advert.

I'm glad you said to elaborate on not a novice ride as I would of put that in although I was a novice! I think you're right they use it everywhere now especially as I'm looking for a novice horse it's annoying when they add it on the end!

Another question (sorry)
What do people expect to see when viewing I've got a friend that will ride him as obv people want to ride and see them ridden? Anything else unusual? Spose everything that is in ad?


And photos?
Ridden in all 3 paces, beautiful standing shots?
 
Sorry to ask so many questions, I've only ever sold from field and I think cos I've been conned in past by fake advertisement I don't want to upset anyone plus I need the right home for him as he's my baby and I don't really want him to go! Lol but sadly field ornaments are too expensive'

To be honest, I would describe Ned as "not novice ride", although I am a complete novice to owning a horse! I just got on well with him because I got to know him gradually over 5 years before hand. Also, a 12yr old rides him and she gets on famously with him, but again, that's because she knows him. I guess what I'm trying to say is - When you first start riding him, he can seem like a really difficult horse, but once you know his personality and how to read him, he's actually quite easy!
Most of the time, I think people put it because they want someone like Mary King buying their horse, not you're average person and are covering themselves, if you get me :P


re photos - sounds good! if you're selling as a riding, horse, put ridden photos, if you're selling a jumper, put jumping photos etc etc :)

ETA: Some people (like my YM) don't really ask anything! "Is he safe?" "Has he had anyone off?" etc, but others really drill and want to know every last detail!

I think hunter and Ned are synced ;) as that sounds like my boy! And obv because he's 5 they aren't suitable for the fair hearted ;) but he is as I was a novice and he keeps me safe and sadly it's not his fault why I'm selling :(

Hehe! Some horses, you really just have to get to know! I feel like such an idiot when I get on another horse, as I only know Ned really!

Aw :( I can't imagine how hard it must be to sell one! It was hard enough to see two of YM's go!
 
Ask the people who are coming to view what they want to see - I usually ask if people want to get the horse in from the field, if they want to groom it or tack it up - most people want to do all that stuff. Generally people want to see the horse ridden by the seller before they get on and will usually want to be able to take it up the road a little way (I usually walk out on foot with people a little way to check they are competent and then let them go a little further on their own, but try to avoid them getting out of sight). If it's a quiet road then they may ask you if you can drive a vehicle past the horse so that they can see that it is alright in traffic and some people may ask you to hack it out first. Just be guided by the buyer so that they can see enough for them to be able to make an informed decision. Hope that helps!
 
I got sold another horse so I could compete and it put me in hospital :( so I am NEVER going near dealers again. The horse was sold to me as a novice ride and would take me through competitions as a novice and this is what it did to me

So I now have to confidence to ride :(
