Have just acquired space in the house to keep my tack, so I'll have several saddle racks stacked one on top of the other and then bridle hooks alongside. What would be the best/cheapest/smartest way to protect the walls? Could just use hardboard and paint it but not sure how it would look, also thinking about shiplap type cladding but it might be a bit of a faff to fit so wondering what others have done?

I just screwed a short bit of oak into the wall and then screwed in the saddle rack. I have done the same for bridle rack, hat hooks, coat hooks, key hooks and ruck sack hooks. You could get a piece of mdf and then paint it so it is more colourful.

Alternatively if you want to give the effect of panelling you could just screw lengths of wood in and horizontal bars and then add your racks to those.

Thanks, that gives me some good ideas. Have this vision of a beautiful old fashioned dark panelled tack room when actually my teeny tack space will be in the second loo....

Hi, what kind of wall will you be fixing the saddle racks to? If it's a solid wall, you should be fine with solid wall fixings, but if you're fixing to a stud wall, you'll need to make sure the saddle racks are fixed to the vertical timbers just to make sure they're good and secure, and don't damage the wall. As for what to put on the wall, you can get waterproof MDF sheets (usually with a green tinge) that are designed for wall cladding in bathrooms and you can get those in a tongue and groove design - use a primer undercoat followed by a couple of layers of an eggshell / gloss topcoat in the colour of your choice.
