Im looking for a supplement, cream, lotion etc for Jed as he's constantly itchy. The main area i see him itching is his hocks and inner thighs.

He loves me to give him a good scratch and when he comes in and is tied up will try to find anything to itch himself on.

I hate the thought of him being out in his field all day feeling really itchy and having nothing around to scratch on.

So im hoping if i can get him on a supplement it will help him feel a little more comfortable.

Any ideas?

Sounds like he needs a really really good brush! That sort of area needs to be brushed often and really thoroughly because that's where sweat can build up. If I were you I'd attack him with a rubber curry comb going softly, and then a body brush. He may even need to be 'spot bathed' with some shampoo and water - preferably an anti-bacterial shampoo. Of all else fails, then I'd use a supplement. I've heard good things about Dodson and Horrell Itch Free! But first, I would give him a really good brush and probably a little bit of a wash there. Hope it works! xx

I brush him "thoroughly" twice a day and he is always washed off after riding taking extra care in the sweaty areas.

Will look into Itch Free.

Thanks.

Our cob is an itchy horse too, not for ant particular reason, he's just like a good scratch. He's now fed brewers yeast which does seem to work and may keep the flies away too. Our other horses hate it and won't eat feed with it in ( must be like marmite?). Worth a try, ours was from equss health.

Good old spring bath and a groom, get rid of any dead skin, loose coat and unlock any blocked pores, apply some Coppers Fly Rep. Plus, not only does it keep the flys away, kill any nasty bugs that might be living in the coast, it also helps general itchyness.

Seaweed supplement is great for the skin and have seen good results when used on ponies/horses that tend to like the odd scratch, dry skin etc you could see how healthy there skin once you start using it and healthy skin = healthy coat, ditto Brewers yeast as well.

My elderly welsh C mare suffered from really itchy legs - vet gave me an iodine based scrub to wash her down with which worked miracles.

She had no signs of mites / skin disorders so vet said without doing bloods and skin scrapes no way to find out definatively what the cause was. As the wash worked I've left it at that.

Had to bath her daily all over for a week and then just apply to her legs once a week for 3 weeks.

Can't for the life of me remember what it was called but sure if you rang your vet they would know.

you could try de-lousing ? I did my boy twice (two weeks apart) and it helped. My other suggestion is have you checked his private parts

Other than that, here I go again - pig oil and sulphur seems to be fab at stopping itching. ;) sm x

Just use your fingernails! My mare asked me to scratch the inside of her hocks and thighs yesterday and this morning too. She can't do it for herself any more so pounces on me as soon as she has finished her breakfast. Its just normal itchiness when they are shedding their coats. I wouldn't dream of washing her at this time of year.
