Quick Q

I have a couple of feed buckets I'd like to write the horses names on (buckets do have a tendency to wonder off on a yard of 30+ horses). What would you recommend to use? I have used nail varnish in the past but found this came off relatively quickly.

I have a couple of paint marker pens (similar to the below). I'm reluctant to use anything toxic, but it is going to be such a small amount and unlikely the horses are going to be licking the outside of the buckets...

Any recommendations would be welcome :)

For coloured tub trug types I just use a permanent marked but the black feed skips I've in the past used tip-ex or had cable ties printed up to attach to the handles which works well too.

I've used nail varnish in the past and then gone over it was a clear coat. Nowadays I tend to just use paint that is left over from when I painted the stables.

Tip ex here. Just re-apply every now and then. I was never very good at washing mine when i used them so they got a good while out of it lol

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I'm feeling a bit soppy at the moment and quite like the idea of putting names on (i do have some lovely cactus duct tape to mark which rugs are mine). I'll have a poke around the garage and see what gloss paint might be hanging around.

First idea:
  • If the plastic is think enough, carve the horse's name into the plastic using a Dremel. Thoroughly de-grease the plastic.
  • Mix up some epoxy glue, and into that mix pigment of a colour that contrasts with the plastic.
  • Fill in the carved name with the coloured epoxy and wait for it to set.
  • This might work if your buckets are rigid enough; if they are flexible, then the epoxy will probably fall out.
Second idea
  • Get a little brass or aluminium plate engraved with the horse's name (optionally darken the engraving with paint).
  • Pop-rivet the name plate to the bucket, or use a split-ring to attach it to the handle.

Hi, just for my interest, would anybody ever be interested in buying a personalised feed/water bucket with their horse's name on the side. Could be any font etc and would be an outdoor-resistant vinyl. Just wondering for a little something I'm working on. Would only cost a little more than a standard bucket.

When DD went to PC camp I made a stencil from cereal packet card and used aerosol car paint to put the ponies name on everything. 15 yrs later I still find things with his name on!
hint: When you go to the shop to buy paint get a light and a dark colour.

Yes. It would save buckets from going missing on the yard. We have to label tools, rugs and haynets and it takes ages. Named buckets would be a nice little thank you present for helpful friends on the yard too.
