What to wear for local dressage?

I am planning to go to a local dressage comp at the end of this month just doing an intro test. It is the first time for me and my mare so I have a lot of questions! The main one being what to wear, someone I know who has been before told me some people were smart and others casual. I have some light brown/beigey Kadence jodhpurs, brown brogini short boots and chaps, would these be alright, then I don't know what else to wear. I don't have a jacket/shirt/stock or tie because I've never done this before, what colour jacket would people recommend I buy because id like to use it for other things such as showing. I am just buying new boots because mine are very bad but I don't know whether to buy the same again or find something smarter? Finally, is it ok to use a brown fluffy numnah? Thank you, any more advice to do with anything is very welcome!

Do make an effort to turn out even for just intro! I judge and it really stands out the people that don't as most people make a big effort!
You need white or beige jods, how jacket, stock and pin, smart boots or gaiters, a hair net and gloves.
Horse should have a plain snaffle bridle, No boots and a white saddlecloth.
Ideally make sure your horse is plaited and well groomed and make sure you have a number on your bridle!
Best of luck x

I agree you need to try and make an effort but you do not need all the gear listed above, a shirt with a collar and tie is fine, no need to get a stock and pin, especially if you also want to show when a stock is not correct in any classes.

Invest in a decent tweed jacket, you can get one second hand, that will do for the dressage and be correct for showing, a much better investment than a navy one.

Buy black boots and chaps, or better still some gaiters, they will be more suitable than brown for everything. Brown gloves.

A neat brown fuffy numnah is fine, nothing in the rules states you must wear white, bridle numbers are not always used for local level so check when you enter, most local venues still have paper numbers you wear on your back.

Wow! I literally have none of that, thank you for replying though! It is called Have a go Mufti Summer Dressage Series, doesn't mufti mean casual wear?

Can you borrow a jacket from a horsey friend for your first few events then you can have a think about what colour & style to buy. I would look for a tweed jacket they are very versatile.

I will ask the girl I am going with because she did say they may have a spare, but its just whether or not its the right size!

You didn't say it was mufti in your OP but it still is worth making an effort and saving up to buy what you need when you can afford it, there is no point in buying something that you only wear for one purpose so ensure you get the correct things that can do showing as well as dressage, it is why I said tweed and shirt and tie as you can wear that for anything whereas a navy jacket and stock is incorrect for showing.

I would get a cheap shirt and pick up a nice tie from your local charity shop, they normally have a choice and some will be good quality, I have loads of silk ties that cost no more than £1 which gives me a selection to choose from. Wear your jods, boots and chaps, when you replace get black ones so they can be used for showing, a V neck jumper or smart sweat shirt in a plain dark colour should be fine for this dressage.

I have never heard of Mufti so I don't know what folk wear.
I wear a Tweed jacket for unaffiliated dressage. Have a good time whatever you wear :-)

Thank you, sorry I forgot to mention it was mufti. I have been riding for years but never actually done anything competition-wise hence why I'm a bit clueless! I will look for a shirt and tie so at least I have those things, will I need a hairnet?

Don't worry too much about buying expensive gear for your first test. As mentioned a second hand jacket would be fine. As long as you are both clean and tidy then a judge should be more interested in the actual test. My friend recently won her first intro test wearing a black v-neck jumper! Her test was beautifully ridden and she scored over 80%. To me this is what should matter at low level dressage :)

Mufti = casual. Tho you do need to be clean and smart. Keep it simple and subtle and make sure your hat is of the correct standard, wear gloves, and make sure your tack is BD legal.
