My boyfriend has asked if I would like to go to the final meeting at Newmarket at the weekend. If we go then we will be in the premier enclosure where I know a smart dress code applies.

I have never properly been to the races. I would know what to wear in warmer months but I have no idea now the weather has turned cold. Boyfriend says the wind there gets particularly chilly too! Has anybody been during the colder times and can tell me what is accepted in the enclosure?

My main problem is footwear as I don't want my feet to get really cold or to be wandering around muddy areas in silly shoes. I wondered if I could get away with Dubarry type boots as mine are new and clean and I could polish them. Perhaps with smart trousers, a smart winter coat and accessories? Or maybe boots like that are totally unacceptable!

If anyone can give me a clue then that would be great please. All pics I can find are from summer too so it's impossible to see what people wear at this time of year!

Thank you!

For winter racing (and I've been to Newmarket Premier Enclosure in winter) I tend to wear long black boots (not country yard boot types, but flat leather boots), thick black tights, a winter day dress, then a long winter coat and a pretty scarf. I have a nice belt that I wear over the coat to cinch in the waist, then a decent sized statement handbag ... with a brolly in it :p

Not sure about dubarry type boots?

Thank you for the input. Footwear is definitely going to be my problem... I have very wide feet so don't have much in the way of smart options! Perhaps I can borrow some long boots from someone else.

I think I could manage the rest! :)

The only potential muddy bit you'd have to walk on is the grass in the car park...unless you manage to park on the concrete! Everywhere else you can avoid grassy bits easily.

Agree that Durburry boots may not look great, however, doubt they would refuse you entry for wearing them! You're not supposed to wear jeans in premier but when we went in Premier last year for my dad's birthday we counted about 10 people wearing them - and it was mid-week so that actual number of people there at all was low! I was quite disgruntled looking at people warm in jeans while I had stupid tights on.

If your durbaury boots look smart, and are comfortable wear them, I bet there will be lots of peeps in them. Unless you really want to dress up. Yourl get into most premier enclosures in anything apart from trainers

Thanks everyone. My boots are hardly worn and do look clean and smart... in my head I can make them look nice with a smart outfit but then I picture myself stood next to my boyfriend, who will no doubt wear a suit, and they seem ridiculous! Perhaps I will try to buy some smart, flat boots which will be more appropriate. It's either that or wear a pair of heels and just try to wear warm tights so my feet don't freeze! Argh!

We were there in July at a summer music evening and remember that weather. We dressed for the weather with white trousers, dubarrys, smart tweed jacket and carried a long waterproof coat for the rain. We even ate in the summer pavillion restaurant and there were no problems. As long as you are clean and smart (blue jeans a no, no, ties for men etc) there should be no problem. I think they are aware that too stricter a dress code that means people get cold and wet does not encourage spectators to come again.
