What to wear?

What do people advise to wear when you want to do a bit of everything?

Can't afford more than one jacket...

So riding club level competing, unaffiliated shows, maybe low level ODE/SJ/dressage.

Is there one look that would fit all?

Thanks

Would a navy blue, competition jacket be considered overdressed and unusual for my first unaffiliated intro dressage competition? I just happen to have access to one and don't want to/can't invest too much money in what might be a very short lived competition experience. Or should I scour the second-hand shops and/or ebay for a bargain tweed jacket if i can find one? I really don't want to look anymore 'all-the-gear-and-no-idea' than I'm already destined too with my limited dressage skills!

Hey thanks Muddybay, and for the speedy reply. That's really reassuring. I just hope to have a quiet (i.e. 'stealth') attempt at my first dressage test which will be daunting enough in itself (gulp!).

A navy blue jacket is completely suitable. Should have black boots and black or navy hat cover.
Tweed = brown.
Navy/black = black boots.
Never black gloves, or is this being too nit picking?

Thanks. That's good to know too. Re gloves, are they a must? I do own a dark brown pair, but tend not to wear them when riding because I find trying to adjust my girth and stirrup leathers (I don't have my own saddles so the stirrups always need fiddling with on various peoples' horses I ride, and reaching down to adjust different girths....well need I say more) is really difficult with gloves on - for me! Consequently, if I'm wearing gloves I have to whip them off, stuff them in my pockets temporarily, make the adjustments, and then find my gloves again and put them one. All a faff, espically for those waiting for me to get off on a hack, or get on with the lesson. I know, I know, I need to practice this and stop being so uncoordinated.

I do a bit of everything although mainly SJ. I have a navy show jacket, beige jods (although I wear grey for SJ), usual black leather boots, just got a new navy new style (non velvet) hat and navy SSG gloves. Cant really go wrong with that I dont think as you can wear it for anything. Only time I bring out a tweed jacket is if Im doing working hunter or showing.

Wearing gloves for dressage is a rule I believe, I got marks off recently at an unaffiliated dressage as Id taken them off to take my over-jacket off and forgotten to put them back on as I went in!

Get your jacket off Facebook or eBay - then you can get a nice one for very little money. I got a lovely jacket that was missing buttons for hardly anything, then just ordered a new set of buttons and sewed them on. Tweed is VERY hot in the summer (but good in the winter!) - the blue/black competition jackets are lighter and cooler. I go for black so it is easy to match to my hat!

Coming back to this post as I'm still not sure I'm right in what I'm wearing...

Not so bothered about fashion but I like to be correct!

I have plain tweed jacket, I bought a fancy coloured/patterned stock, navy velvet hat silk on skull cap, beige breeches and black leather breeches.

Is this ok?

I have SJ tomorrow. I'd wanted a navy jacket but someone said I'd then have to wear white breeches (I cannot put my arse into white)

So am I ok in the tweed ensemble?

If I did go for a navy show Jacket can I wear with a white stick shirt, new style peaked navy hat and beige breeches? Or must they be white?

Help!

You can wear beige with navy for SJ - I do it all the time.

Only buy tweed if you're planning to do showing. Washable navy jackets far easier for everything else these days. No messing around with dry cleaning etc. etc.

Well black leather breeches would certainly get you noticed! ;););)

You do not need to wear white breeches under any circumstances! No matter what colour jacket you wear! Hat choice for jumping is up to you.

My daughter wears navy jacket and light grey breeches for SJ. She only wears white for eventing (why???). You’ll be fine in beige
