What turns you off a yard or what are your yard pet peeves?

I know it's only a little thing but I really dislike when yards don't keep up their appearances. I don't know if it's just me being a perfectionist but it's not hard to put away heavy machinery, slap a few layers of paint on walls and fences etc.

I also hate when liveries are snobby to the less experience when they're struggling and have the guts to ask for help! We all started somewhere!

What turns you off yards or what are your yard pet peeeves?
 
When certain people get prioritized over others. Getting treatment in terms of having things done for them that they wouldn't do for someone else.

Treating younger people like they don't have a clue.

asking the landlord/ yo to do something that they offer to do j. The first place like empty a big poo trailer 18 months ago and still having to remind him to do it. Last Tuesday and still not been moved ( that's personal one lol)
 
People who don't talk to each other, liveries and YOs included. I came from a scruffy chatty yard and the smart yard I'm on now has about as much atmosphere as the London Underground :( :(
 
Oooh a have a few...

-Lack of turnout.
-Favoritism.
-An absent YO. YO should be in charge and follow up rules consistently.
-Untidiness.
-Disorganization.

Hm..I could probably go on :P
 
Massive holes in the concrete, impossible to trot up and I keep turning my ankle over. :(

I'd move if the YO was unreasonable or if turn out was awful.
 
:D I was just thinking about this tonight, as I undid the 4th haynet put up by our new girl...


I HATE HATE HATE when people tie haynets up with the knots on the end of the string rather than by the net.... REALLY annoys me (to a really ridiculous level if Im honest !!)
 
I cant stand snooty people. I feel I get looked down on as I am not out competing every week, however the yard I am on now is the friendliest I have ever been on and if anything, I am the difficult one to live with, getting in a small huff at finding cigarette butts in the corridor where my horses stable is. I cant stand litter at the best of times as think it is fisrespectful, but maybe I am oversensitive....
 
broken concrete! it really grates against me :o and when they dont pull up weeds and broken plasic chairs and machinery not put away and i hatee scruffy fencing!! so that completely writes off the place im at, at the moment ;) except the concrete... the concrete is good :p but now im here im fine but i do wish it were tidyer but everything is being moved around at the moment and there are 2 buissnesses run at the yard too which both involve a lot of traffic in and out of the yard which annoys me as they always happen to be parked infront of rio's gate!! but other then that i cant complain :)
 
Omg racergirl! Me too! I thought I was the only one! Every person I know puts the knot at the end and it takes ages of pick pick picking to loosen it!
 
Bitchy gossipy YO's who breed vitriolic discontent amongst their liveries and sit back feeling untouchable as they are "in charge":mad:
 
Well I dont do livery yards but

Over bearing YO's - I do DIY so leave me to it please I dont NEED your input unless I ask for it.

Having to pay to use facilities that SHOULD be included in the livery like schools/walkers etc

No storage for your OWN hay/bedding and YOs not letting you have your own if your DIY making you buy from them, unless included in livery ie full etc I only do DIY so I prefer to source my own stuff.

More horses than turnout space/acreage and more horses than stables what the heck happens in an emergency??

Oh thank god someone else feels this way!! :D

It nearly gives me a nervous breakdown if the knot isn't near the haynet!! Cobrastyle is guilty of tying with knot on end of string, aren't you Cobrastyle (?) and it plays havoc with my OCD!!! ;):)

Generally though, I am put off by any large yard, bitchiness and I don't generally like farmy type yards. I prefer small, quiet yards with only a few people on. Fencing is a big issue to me, and security. I cringe at the sight of barbed wire and broken fencing. I don't mind if it's blocked off or fenced off with electric, but any wire or junk laying around in fields is a no no for me straight away. I am also pretty fussy on appearances of yards - they have to be tidy and clean within a reasonable standard (obv not immaculate!). Stables have to be proper stables - large,dry and airy with electric. None of these makeshift portacabins etc etc.

Not fussed about things like horsewalkers, solariums, multiple schools, showjumps etc etc. As long as there is somewhere to ride there is either a level field or one school available then I'm happy!

For me it's a problem because it's not really 'quick release' friendly (I'm a bit old school!!). The knot usually gets caught and stops the net from dropping to the ground if it's at the end.

I thought it was just me, glad to find I am not alone, its worse in winter when your fingers are frozen and you spend 10 minutes picking at a solid lump of knotted string.

Actually to be fair to YO's. They will be paying a fixed rate for their yard and cannot keep a spare stable back for grass liveries. I know mine has moved things around to accommodate when needed but realistically, you can't ask them to keep empty boxes. If a livery chooses grass livery, then that means no box.

I do not like a YO who treats their liveries like children and those who act as though they are doing you a massive favour while in fact, you are the customer and are paying for the honour.

I am really happy where I am. More so because I have been on the receiving end of painful YOs as described in the past. Its horrible when you realise you actually don't want to go up as not sure what mood the YO is going to be in. I enjoy coming upto my yard, and remind myself that this is how it should be.. I always have a secret wish that we had an indoor school for those of us who are riding late in the dark when its also windy and pouring but then who doesn't!

we have more horses than acres but have plenty grass out every day , and get hay off our fields , because we don't do grass livery .

In fact this year we had way to much grass as ours is very well maintained , its only an issue if you do not maintain your grazing.
we have 24 stables and 11 horses

you only have to look at my other thread with pictures of my fields to see some land copes

Rude, condescending people - especially staff / yard owner.

Pet peeves - I hate it when people don't clean up after themselves - i.e their horse does a poo (in the school or on the yard), and they just leave it there and walk off, and expect others to tidy up after them. There was someone at a previous yard who would ride their three horses one after another in the school, and leave about 10 poos in the arena for others to pick up. Because I rode after this person, it was always me that had to spend fifteen minutes picking up their horses poos before I could get on my horse . They'd also leave big poos in the wash bay. It really wound me up!!!

Yards that specify what time you can go up- walked away from looking at one yard who said you can't come up before 9am and have to be gone by 7 even in summer!
Friend is on a yard that doesn't allow turnout at the weekends oct-April, no way could I tolerate that
 
A complete lack of 'please' or 'thank you'.

And people who open their mouths without thinking first. Also younger people (read persons) who think that it's ok to tell you they wouldn't do x, y, or z because they're oh, so much more experienced than your 25 odd years of horse keeping.

It may not be what 'YOU' do, but it's what I do, ok? And it's not hurting anyone or any horse. And if I wanted your opinion, delivered with all its vitriol and acerbity, I'd ask for it. And if it's working for me, yah, boo, sucks.
