I was just wondering what type of bedding you would most likely use if you had a choice? It would be used with rubber matting too but still quite thick beds used...

cardboard, from Ecobed, on top of rubber. i've used this for years (about 8 now) and won't use anything else, can't work out why everyone doesn't use it! it doesn't break down to dust, unlike shavings, it's a lot cleaner than paper, it's very warm, easy to muck out, rots down quickly and can be used as mulch, worms love it (wormery guy used to take it away for nothing at my old place, couldn't get enough of it!) i do 1/3- 1/2 a bed, normal depth, at rear of stable, and it takes 4 mins to muck out per stable, very easy.
even if money was no object, i'd stick with it.

I love flax bedding, easibed too hard pony would not lay down and it was quite sharp I thought. I do tend to mix shavings with the flax sometimes as I have had problems getting the flax and still all ok very absorbant too as I have a dirty poy. A friend recomended megasorb but never used it myself

Another one for flax!
I have 2 big messy horses in quite small stables and it's so easy to muck out and keep clean. Love it

What is flax and where do you get it? My horse is v v v wet and on shavings and box walks, so stable is disgusting every day. Am considering alternatives...

I use boring old shavings on top of rubber.
Are you preparing for the box resting/mucking out twice a day routine? If so, maybe I should mention I went through twice as many shavings bales as normal....

If that is the stuff that comes in yellow bales, I vote for it too! I have just changed to it from Sundowner bedding - more expensive but worth it, easier to muck out, nicer for the horse (I think - he hasn't really commented though

) as it leaves the stable drier and no dust that I have noticed

Flax is a material look on thorogoods website its called edelin on there but you can also get by the name of equisorb. It does not stick to the droppings and I find it better than shavings for absorbancy the wet stays at the bottom even if they walk about a bit. It can be a bit difficult to sweep if you get it on the yard but never breaks down and is not dusty. I really notice how dusty shavings are when i mix it I pay 5.50 a bale and use 1 a week in the summer and 1 a week then 2 the next week back to 1 a week - hope that makes sence. Let me know f you need any more info or stockists

I've been doing the box rest anyway for 5 weeks

Just was looking for something less dusty than shavings really... and more absorbant.

Glad you've been in training

When my girl came back from colic surgery and was box rested after always being field kept, I realised two things;
1. She is utterly filthy in the stable
2. I was very unfit for mucking out twice a day.
Hope Grace makes it home for Christmas.

Flax would deffo be for you then. My 17.1hh and 17hh horses are in pretty much 24/7 I take out a wheelbarrow load form each in the morning and I skip them out again in the evening (the 2 combined fills one normal sized tub trug).

I use Nedzbedz pro on top of rubber matting. Its the only bedding that suits my very wet and messy mare! Its really absorbant and I only get through a bale a week, when she was on shavings it was 2 - 3 bags per week.

I tried Equisorb when B&H were on box rest when H was little - HORRIBLE stuff!! Very slippery and difficult to keep tidy - esp. if any got on to the yard!! Worse than paper for sweeping! Also worked with Aubiose and I thought the same of that - so not a fan of the fine fibre of hemp I'm afraid.

I've foaled mares on bedmax (well a generic version of it) and I had B on it last winter and I will foal her on it (that or paper) . No dust, nice big flakes, absorbent and economical.

Thanks everyone... think will stick to NedzBedz as was heppy with it when foaling Hannah. Right, I'll have to go and buy some tomorrow (well organise for it to be delivered at new yard as I am at Olympia tomorrow...)
