What type of horse will always sell?

A safe, sensible, sound one with a good basic allround education that is nice on the ground and good in traffic, it does not matter what size if it fits this criteria there will always be someone for it.

The one we're always asked for in the shop (as in 'we're looking for, if you know of anything) is 14.2 - 15hh, lives out, good all ways, has hunted, shown, pony club camped, can leave it in the field for a month, doesn't need hard feed, goes barefoot. Must be a complete saint as may be going to live with a family who has no knowledge of horses at all!

If you find one like this let me know!! Had horses for over 30 years but never had one of these.

15.2hh MW type, that is responsive without being fizzy. Non-spooky, doesn't nap/buck/rear. Will pop it's nose in when rider fiddles on rein and pootle around a prelim for 65%. Will happily pop around 2'6" courses.

This will always sell provided sound and friendly.

Not too big 16.1 max, gelding (some people are anti mares but very few anti geldings, sensible age 8-11 y/o so has miles on the clock, one that anyone can hop on and have fun with, so will jump, prelim dressage, hunt, sponsored ride etc. not to any great level but will have a week off, be dragged out and pop round 2'6 no issue. will pass a vetting and good in traffic

I have one who is sadly 22 now but if I had a cloning machine I'd put him in it every day and sell 100's no problem

Clearly proven 4* eventers will always sell too but slightly harder to find/ produce !!

Irish type middle weight 15.2hh-16.1hh. Easy ride and easy keeper, straightforward type, good all rounder (and coveted even more if talented), vice free and a sensible type on the ground good with all normal activities - box, shoe, clip etc. The only problem is if you get one of these you will struggle to force yourself to sell it! (Speaks someone who bought a green 5yo to produce further & sell....shes now 9yo and not going anywhere! :o)

A good one! :)

Always in demand are perfect first ponies 12.2hh mark

and good safe RC types 15.2-16.2 can do it all and not difficult to handle

14.2 first event ponies that will look after a small jockey round tracks up to 1m. The sort that can do all pc area teams, rc teams and introduce the jockey to BE. Whilst being safe to hack, hunt and do pc rallies and camp. Need self preservation and the ability to sort out any mistakes made from the jockey.

A good first ridden!
every show we go to we are approached about mini mes pony.
12hh, safe , sane , sensible, works in a natural outline, happy to go first or last, jumps up to 90 cms, never touches a pole, brave xc and hunts with no change in temperament. Easy to handle on the ground, utterly bombproof on roads and not phased by anything.
flashy enough for the show ring , but a good doer, lives out all year.

I bought a 14.2 (well she's really 14.3 but has a height certificate) 7yo sensible, laid back, responsive, good in traffic very good doer who's won WHP classes (and got 3rd at Cheshire show!), has a super jump, who will work in an outline and is extremely sweet natured. She does have shoes, I plan to go fronts only and BF if poss. I paid £3300 and quite frankly I can't believe I found one like this at such a reasonable price. I'm immensely grateful that she was only advertised on one not-very-horsey site! I think I could sell her again in a heartbeat - but I will NOT be doing that for as long as my circumstances let me keep her, which is hopefully forever.

And these always sell for £££, regardless of age!

One that can really jump gets snapped up immediately.
I've been on the hunt for one for years! They are out there but rarely come up for sale or stay on the market long enough for me to buy it.

I think 14.2hh's are easiest to sell as you get both parts of the market (kids and some adults). Ideally something nativey but pretty (pretty always sells!). Age 8 or 9. That is genuine and honest to jump and that is easy to handle and ride. I used to buy project ponies (13.2hh - 14.2hh) and even the 4 / 5yo's sold easily generally as long as I'd taken them out for a bit of competition experience and got some results. Its never worth buying one to sell that has vices though, the only one pony I struggled to sell eventhough she was a fantastic Pony Club pony, was a cribber!

Yup. With a budget of £1500 max.....

This is what I thought I'd bought (bar being able to take hunting). Now I'm not so sure. Watch out for a "wwyd" thread coming soon to a forum near you!

It's really hard to answer this as people are looking for completely different horses all the time, for example I never look for a completely sane "never put a foot wrong" horse as I don't actually think they exist! ;)
But ponies can actually sometimes have a bigger market because they are getting out-grown all the time (bare in mind a lot of people try to skip 13.2hh's & go straight to 14hh'ers). I found when looking recently there was also a huge lack of 15-15.3hh horses, maybe because they're in less demand but more likely because they get snapped up quickly (great transition from ponies!)
Irish breeds are well-known for being good all-rounders & you see a lot of them for sale but I'm always wary of horses that were actually imported from Ireland.
Essentially most people are looking for something that is SAFE, that won't take off/rear or do anything dangerous. As far as maintenance goes (unshod/shod, feed, stabling, etc) I don't think really plays that much of a factor - if someone likes a horse, the fact it's shod on all 4 or whatever, normally doesn't matter.

This sort of horse will ALWAYS sell: i.e.

14.3hh through to 15.2hh Cob/TB cross or M&M X say Welsh Cob, or something like Cleveland Bay X. 6 - 8 y.o. gelding. Nice polite horse out hacking, done a bit of Working Hunter at few shows and been placed, or done something like Le Trec, hunted regularly. Ridden by all members of the family, done Pony Club with the younger members plus say Hunter Trials. Good to shoe, do, clip & load. Totally bombproof, unfazed by all traffic and can be seen ridden alongside heavy traffic. Goes first or last, pops a fence. Snaffle mouth. Done a bit of Riding Club.

Now....... having looked for a horse with EXACTLY this job description, I know for sure & definite that they're ALWAYS totally impossible to find.

Either a super safe cob with a good temprament and hacks alone/ in company with your nan but would also pop round the local 2ft6

Or a 16hh nicely put together capable of RC stuff.

Nothing with vices/ bad confo/ dangerous/ quirky etc etc

Almost the exact description of my old horse. But he was 14hh lol

Like mine!! I find that those types are sometimes silly prices, though (don't think mine was too crazy).

I'd say a safe family type, suitable for all, weight carrying sturdy thing that can live out and doesn't need rugging.

I think various sized ponies and horses over 16h that are middleweights and capable of doing well at local level in most classes. Honest, uncomplicated types that you can trust and do most things with.
