HI there,
Can any of you guys out there explain to me about the different levels of vetting . I am going to see a horse 2mrrow
and have been advised to have the best one , is that the 5 level? Does anyone know the approx. cost? Grateful for any of your views.

Hi.

Normally will start in the stable with a check of eyes/heart/lungs/ Then outside, where they will do a flexion test and possibly lunging on concrete and trotting up in straight line...
2. Outside in daylight to observe the whole horse when standing square. Then walk and trot in hand in a straight line. Turning and backing. Probably flexion tests. Possibly lunging or trotting in a circle.

Then under saddle - walk/trot/canter and possibly gallop dependng on fitness.

Formal identification - filling out a sheet with markings, and then examining hooves, limbs etc

Possibly then another trot up, and the taking of blood for analysis I think in most cases.

That is the 5 Stage - the other one is a 2 stage, which is much more limited - normally a 'look over' really, and much less likely to look into various lameness problems....

It is necessary to have a vetting in order to get insurance. Price wise...hmmm...but it is also possible for a horse to pass with the vet, and then the insurance company to say no due to anything brought up. The vet is merely saying that the horse is suitable for what you want to do with them.

A 5 stage will cost anything from 200 - 350 dependng on vet and whether you have blood tests. I don't think that it is normal now really to have the blood tests though - I didn't.

Hope that helps!

I had a 2 stage vetting for my youngster (obviously as she isn't backed!) at it cost approx £160? Infact I've had two, one on the horse I was going to buy before Indie (and I am glad I had it done- it failed!!) . A 5 stage is a Must for purchasing a riding horse, worth the money every bit, and check with your planned insurance provider as they will ask for a vet certificate if the horse is worth X amount. Good Luck!

we had a two stage done on mccauly before we bought him, this checked heart, lungs, checked eyes, and all over the body, then flextion tests trot up and lunging, instructor advised us that is all we will need as she said when she had a five stage they examined the horse as if it was going to the olympics! and failed for a few small ridiculous things that werent even that important!
xx

Thanks for your help, it is hard to know which one to go for,
i am not payin a huge amount for the horse, if i decide to go ahead (£2500) aprox. so would that need 5 stage vetting for insurance purposes?

I think you need a 5 stage for all insurance - maybe a 2 stage wouldn't cover such things as legs..or heart...or something. I bought the pony for 1600, and had a 5 stage and full insurance therefore. If I hadn't of had her insured, then when she had to have surgery I would have had to have had her put down as it cost 6000 which the insurance paid ALL of, and I just paid the 500 excess...seems a better deal eh?

I would speak to your vet, and to your proposed insurance company, as I do not know the ins and outs of what level of insurance you get with a 2 stage if any.

Got to go to uni...argh...9am lecture.....
