What vehicle & trailer do you have? - rate it out of 10

Thanks for the replies and please keep them coming

There are lots of 4x4 vehicles mentioned but does anyone have cars or perhaps vans that they tow with?

we used to tow our HB505 with Renault Traffic van and it was fine, 2tonne towing capacity and just had 1 horse - only prob was it got stuck really easily parking on grass.

We currently have a Ford Kuga in the 2 wheel drive model as our Nissan x-trail blew up :(

Ford Kuga gives a very smooth towing ride, round corners and motorways etc. Pick up is smoother. However being 2WD I wouldn't trust it on soft ground - mum's already been stuck in it on slightly soft ground without the trailer! For me this is quite a drawback... so I give it 6/10. Also wouldn't put a second horse in there. Currently got a rather solid 14.2hh but wouldn't risk a second.

Nissan X-trail was awesome! Once we went to a very soggy showground and Defenders were getting towed on, we just cruised up very smugly :D not very economical on the fuel though... I'd give it 9/10

Trailer is a Richardson. Travelled a 16.3hh very very long mare in it and she had plenty of room - however she once moved the mats all the way round which is one of the scariest experiences ever! We've since had them bolted down and there hasn't been a hint of a slip since. I think she pawed a lot, then got her hoof caught underneath and panicked and scrambled around. Thankfully she was fine and still loaded perfectly. Would definitely reccommend it though as I think mat slippage was a freak accident! 9.5/10

Have a 55 plate Kia Sorrento and an Ifor Williams HB506

I would rate the Kia 10/10 I love it and the trailer 9/10 never had any issues with it and it looks great horse travels well also

Defender and 511..i have a new chav number plate so no need to black out.10/10 for both..My only little niggle is that i wish i had got the red 511 instead of blue.

I don't have any pics but I tow my Bateson Ascot trailer with an automatic Landrover Discovery (56 plate) and I would honestly give 10/10 for both! :D

The Disco pulls the trailer so easily and I feel happy knowing I have more than enough vehicle power to pull my horse (16.3hh TB) and trailer safely, or two horses if I needed to.

The trailer has storage space for tack at the front, a window so I can see what my horse is up to and a mirror for hitching up if I need it.

I really can't fault this combination!! :)

Automatic Landrover Discovery 3 with a Wessex Olympian. 10/10 the Wessex is great for large horses tons of room plus left hand unload as standard and feels more stable to tow than the Ifor.
Ideally I'd like storage for tack in the trailer but happy to sacrifice that for the overall size and stability. Discovery is great as a car as well as for towing.

Ifor Williams 505 towed with a N reg Discovery TDi. Fitted the disco with BF Goodridge AT tyres and never been defeated by a muddy field. Delivered two horses from West Wales, one to London and one to Nottingham, didn't miss a beat. 9 out of 10. Would be 10 but I want a newer one.

M Reg SWB Shogun & IW HB401

Shogun is a bit of overkill for a single trailer and a 14hh!

6/10 for the Shogun- fuel consumption isn't great, and it leaks when it rains, but it's super easy to drive for a shorty like me. It lacks space though now I have a child (& associated stuff).

7/10 for the IW HB401- I've had a few niggles with it since I bought it (new), but pony loves it and stands herringbone in it.

Mitsubishi Pajero ( shogun) and HB510 to travel 2 15.2 horses. No problems except fuel consumption but Pajero does little else besides horsey stuff
Used to have a Disco TD300 which seemed more suited to horsey work.
So Pajero 6 and Ifor 9

I have a freelander TD4 auto, and an ifor 401 - the freelander has no problems towing, good turning circle easy to drive, pulls well. I have reversing sensors so easy to hitch!

Would like a rear facing trailer or horsebox but would need to be automatic. If I go for an equitrek trailer I would think about a kia sorento

freelander with a single trailer 9/10 -

Well, if you fancy upgrading your SWB to a LWB let me know as I want a SWB Shogun or Pajero for when I can't use the Hyundai any more (sadly it isn't mine, is kindly leant to me to use and I can't afford to buy an 07 plate anything, let along an 07 plate 4x4, plus I find it all a bit long at the moment!). Would rather buy one I know tbh as otherwise older 4x4s seem to be a bit of a minefield!

BMW 320d pulling cheval liberte xxl, pulls one 17hh horse. Down played to 1500kg so drive without additional trailer test.

10/10 for ease of towing (an I swopped from towing a heavier double with a Nissan navara- so thought I would notice a massive diff)

Easily tows weight, trailer fab and light to push round yard etc

I drive a Ford Ranger and a Batesons Ascot trailer and carry 1 horse wring approximately 490kgs, I do find the Ranger quite bouncy when towing, don't know what the horse feels like. Tows very well, have to keep checking speedo to make sure I stay at 50mph!!

When we move, am thinking about trading them in for a little lorry and cheap runaround car as GG will be kept about 10 miles away and 4 trips a day with a gas guzzler?

@jesstickle- are you sure? I had to mop it out today after the rain yesterday! I like to think it's part of it's "charm". :D

Disco 3 and Richardson Supreme Ultra for two large warmbloods. Use it at least once a week. It us the perfect combination IMO. I have the tack box on the front to carry the saddles and bridles.
Overall rating is 7, which is purely because the finishing on the trailer could be better (dome nuts, non-rusting nuts and bolts, matching tires on all 4 wheels ... ) but then again, I am a perfectionist!
Disco 3 is the best vehicle I have ever towed with and has plenty of room for two adults, and all the gear to stay away for a weekend with the nags ;-)

I tow an Ifor 505 classic with a 17hh and a 14hh no trouble. Up hills the lorry drivers wont use. I use a 2.8 swb Pajero. I love it, the turning circle is very good and it makes towing easy. My friend has a Frontero but having driven the Pajero wants to sell hers and get a Pajero. Def 10/10. and it doesn't leak. LOL

Jeep Cherokee 2.5l Sport Diesel & WessexClubman. This Jeep tows 2250kg & trailer weighs about 890kg so so can tow 2 horses averaging 550 kg & equipment. Fuel economy is pretty good, around 20+ mi per gallon laden. Gets us out of all trouble. As Jeep a real towing machine, though not fancy. Really good turning ratio. Wessex has very good ride & is comfortable for horse, but height is a limitation as should not take horse bigger than 16h2", though if solo could probably take 1 16h3" horse.

Mitsubishi L200 Warrier with a big old Rice double trailer, an enormously long combination which can make turning in confined spaces a real challenge but tows beautifully.
9/10 only because I sense that the springs on the car are getting a little tired and they probably need replacing with something heavy duty for the amount of towing I do

Daihatsu Fourtrak LWB - I'm on the 2nd one. Would rate them 8/10. The first Daihatsu I had to change the 4WD from automatic locking hubs to manual as the 4WD kept failing.

'New' Daihatsu - still an old one, so far the 4WD is fine and has got me through mud and snow OK, but I'm aware that it's old and it has cost me some ££ in repairs even though I've only had it 6 months.

Trailer is an 18yr old IW HB505. Would love a new one, as this one leaks and has needed a lot of repair over the years.

Previous car in between the 2 Fourtraks was an automatic Mitsubishi Pajero LWB. I'll give it 1/10. I was sold a dog. It blew up on its first motorway trip towing. Thank god for my RAC and horsey breakdown cover!

Would love something smoother and more comfortable like a Kia Sorrento. But unless I win the lottery, it ain't gonna happen!!
