I loved pony books when I was a child and my absolute favourite was Fly by Night by KM Peyton about a girl who buys a horse and keeps it in her garden. I still have my copy of it from 30 years ago! Does anybody remember this? What was your favourite?

I remember Fly by Night.
My favourite is a book called Riding Course Summer about a bunch of kids and their ponies who get given a summers worth of riding tuition for saving a dog. I have my copy upstairs. It makes me feel all nostalgic when I read it.

I also loved Prince at Black Pony Inn.

I had loads of pony books when I was a teenager, including Riding Course Summer. I gave them all away in the early 1970s. When my son was at primary school in the late 1980s, his school had a book sale and while he was browsing, he came across Riding Course Summer, opened the cover and found my name inside (I used to write my name inside all my books). He had spent his money on other books, but told his teacher he had found a book that had once belonged to me. She gave him the money to buy it back for me. He was so proud to come home from school with a surprise for me. I still have it today.

Oh wow what a coincidence! Your treasured book found its way back to you, how special!

I haven’t read that one but love the concept. I had a lot of books by the Pullein-Thompson sisters who were prolific.

I was already an adult when I read Fly By Night but loved it and still have it and its sequel. Also as many books by Josephine Pullein-Thompson as I could acquire. Favourite horsey book from my youth was Smoky, still have that as well. Mind you, I am now in my 70's and I still have all my horsey books and re read them quite often.

I have an extensive and expensive pony book collection, all brought as an adult, the PTs, Joanna Cannan, Ruby Ferguson, Patricia Leitch and so on

My favourite would have to be 'Friends must Part' by Diana PT. It was quite a short story and was published with 'horses at home' second favourite probably Patrick's Pony.

The Wild White Stallion by Rene Guillot. That was the one of the first books I took out from our local library. I then moved swiftly on to the Jill books etc., but that book was my favourite and I re-read it a few times.

That’s so lovely. Great to hear I’m not alone in my affection for this type of book. Unfortunately I had to get rid of a lot of my childhood books when I moved country but I have started re-acquiring some of my faves on eBay.

Did anyone have an audiotape of four short stories? It was bought from Robinsons in approx 1995 ish. I used to listen to it every night, can’t remember anything about the actual stories other than one was a bit scary ?
Horses in the Gallery had a couple of spooky stories!

Jane Badger Books are re-publishing a lot of old pony books, if anyone is missing one from their childhood. Some of the books are impossible to find otherwise, so for a collector this is great :)

Another vote for Patricia Leitch, Jinny & Shantih, and the Silver Brumby books. Also Thunderhead, the Black Stallion series (esp the bizarre Black Stallion and Flame). Anything by KM Peyton including her more adult thing on Fred Archer and the sequel to Fly by Night, but also Flambards. There was a book I read in the library that has stayed with me for a long time: "Horse of Air" about a girl riding on her own from a town (?) to a farm in Wales and experiencing random threats and encounters along the way.

King of the Wind, The Perfect Horse and Dream of Fair Horses and the Jill books were particular favourites.
