What was your first gallop like?

Only in the last month. I'd been trying to get the courage to canter alone on a hack. Completed the first canter and I think she just wanted to prove she could go faster. I just let her go for the first bit because I hoped that it would help in pulling her up.... well sort of.

never galloped my current horse :( and had her almost two years!!....

id love to though as in the field she flies.... we just dont have the hacking for a gallop!

my first gallop however was on my first horse.... wejust cantered and my friend said "shall we go for it".... never seen a horse shift :D

we flew :D

1st time was on a little shetland thing when i was 12 lol he was called rolly poly. rest were cantering (i was the only one on a pony that was vertically challenged the rest on nice normal school ponies) Was a bumpy ride but enjoyed it none the less.. lost my confidence completely not long after that.

And recently very fast canter/gallop on old Y/Os horse, i didnt breath the whole time, and was scared, but he is a good horse, very good for building confidence and looked after me! ill never for get it and even done it a 2nd time and shouting turbo power just before shooting off (he always let out gas before putting out the power so became a thing to say and he would react to it haha)

Ill miss him :(

my first gallop was on my loan pony called libby a little 12.3hh nf x we were going up a steep hill i was hacking with my parents both on their 17hh horses so everything felt very fast anyway but mum saw her step upto a gallop and cantered beside me on taz (he was just a baby back then) as i had never gone that fast before and i loved it thatpony was like a little pocket rocket came out at the top of the hill grinning like a cheshire cat hahah :o

taz on the other hand gallops and then he drops alot lower into a faster gallop and god does he cover some ground i love galloping him :)

Last month, on a Section D mare on my first proper hack. The 18.2hh horse in front was on the fastest of all the canter stretches, and as a 14hh pony she galloped and kept up. I could not bring myself to lighten my seat though: I feel much safer with my bum glued to the saddle. How does anyone pluck up the testicular fortitude to stand up on a creature going so fast?

thank you everybody its lovely to hear about everyones experiences. for the people who havent yet galloped i think you should definetly try it. you feel so free..

My first proper gallop was on a 17.2 pure Clyde down in Cornwall going through woodland. Just me and the instructor and I had the most amazing time, never flown so fast!

My first gallop was about 12 years ago on my first 'owned' horse along Ainsdale Beach, absolutly loved it, we went for miles, the faster the better, i had no fear, no worries about stopping, spooking, stumbling, just complete speed.

Fast forward 12 years, my beloved first horse was sadly pts 4 years ago in my arms and i have a 11 years old mare that i have had 5 years, due to various injuries have been unable to take her to the beach until Thurs just gone.

Did i gallop her, no, i completley bottled it, the difference is i think, my age, the lack of trust i have in my current horse, the fear of falling (i have fallen off this mare so many times), i was very dissapointed in myself but just couldnt get past the fear i felt :-(

Not sure i will ever feel confident enough on her to be honest, which is a shame...

I had a friend whose family were just like the Larkins, in fact the Larkins was probably based on them. ;)

We were teenagers then and leading each other into bad ways. The family had a few ponies that we used to ride to check the pheasant pens. This one evening there was quite a crowd consisting of dad and an assortment of kids ageing from seven to teenagers, we were all laughing with one another and hopping on and off the ponies who were also bareback.

Then it got a bit silly and I ended up jumping on the fastest pony and chaseing my friends dad and brother up a steep wood side at a flat out gallop! I was whooping and hollering like an idiot as I over took the both of them at a blur. The pony motored us up the bank and on, only for me to see to my horror the corner come whizzing up, the pony then turned from the fence and bounced back down the bank and I immediatly and very unceremoniously fell onto my nose!......... and dad?? Well, he just cantered on past laughing loudly.:D

Brilliant, brilliant days!!!!!!!

Was riding in the fields and the horse just took of with me.

This. Took The GreyDonk out hacking in the fields the day after the hunt had been through . . . as he went hunting twice a week before I bought him, it was probably a bad idea . . . he went from walk to gallop in about 2 seconds :).
