What were they like? I had a creme 13.2hh when i was little on loan called abbey and then got a 13hh welsh showjumping pony when i was 8. Both of them were little ****s and i fell off constantly lol.
Goblin. Black dartmoor. Reared, bolted, hated children, scared of men, had bad sweetitch, escaped from field on a regular basis and would wander for miles (trying to get home to Dartmoor probably).
Sunshine Rockafella or better known as Rocky. A little 12 hand bay TB X. He was very cheeky. He lived on my grandads farm and just had free run everywhere. If you tried to keep him in a set field he either jumped or chewed/ kicked his way out.
First pony I had on loan was a little 13h grey mare called Pepsi, great pony! Then my first pony we owned was called Snaffles, when I was 9, biggest pain in the a**e ever! Used to take 15mins to mount as he would be swinging his back end at you trying to kick you and when I finally did get on he would run side ways into the nearest fence/wall/gate and crush your leg trying to get you off
He kicked in the stable and charged in the field and you couldn't look over his stable door while he was eating his tea or you would either have his teeth or both back hooves in your face!
Was a shame really he was a mixed up 4 year old that obviously got a bad start in life (we were told he was older and was clearly drugged when we went to view him) but nearly 12 years down the line he now lives with my best friend who has had him the best part of 10 years and her little girl who's legs don't reach the end of the saddle flaps happily trots him round the paddock. Bless them
A 13.3hh bay mare called Velvet who I got on loan when I was 9.
She was quite old, about 22, but acted like she was 4.
She hadn't slight arthritis in her hind legs.
When in the school you'd ask her to canter and that was it she'd be off galloping as fast as she could around a 20x40 school and I would have no brakes at all.
She only jumped small, and she would only do that when she could be bothered.
She was lovely though and I would spend all my spare time down at the yard with her and she would always come to the fence as I greeted her with a carrot
Shambles!
A black shetland type 10.2hh mare. Advertised for £50 inc tack and harness. Parents took the trailer, saw her, felt sorry for her (in a bad 'shambolic state), paid £50, loaded her, minus the harness as it wasn't worth a cent, and brought her home. Oodles of TLC later, she was a star, as far as a shetland can be anyway!! She was only about 2-3 years, been ridden by locals for months - you know the picture!
Had her for 7 years, sold her to her last and forever home. She was PTS 2 years ago as an old lady.
Frizbee, 11.2hh chocolate dun sec a x mare. Was a little superstar who taught my daughter everything. Still jumped for fun after she lost her eye to a tumour.Eventually had to pts at 13yrs old due to severe copd. Daughter still misses her like mad 9yrs later.
Delboy- 4yo 12.2 highland x, mousey dun. He was the naugtiest pony i ever sat on, fell off him everytime i went on grass for a year after we bought him, he used to buck down main road, drop his shoulder, but my god he could jump. He was an evil little ***** in the satble too. Also loved to drink coke!!
Best £450 my mum and dad ever spent!! He taught me to be the rider i am today! Still got the little man out on loan tho. And better behaved now!
Razzle, a grey Section A, bred by the late Harry Llewellyn of Foxhunter fame. I got him on loan when I was 8 and my parents persuaded his owner to sell him to us when I outgrew him as I couldn't bear to part with him. He was a typical little pony, a real horror and was always running away with me but taught me so much and was an amazing games pony. I lost him at the comparatively young age by todays standards of 18, due to liver failure, due we think to drugs he had for a couple of severe laminitis attacks (this was back in the 70s).
Romany, 13.3hh chestnut gelding with flaxen mane & tail, part Welsh Cob. He was given to me when I was 13 by a horse vet in Bury, nr Manchester called Peter Nutt. I was mucking out their horses at the weekends - for no reward other than being near the horses. This pony had been at a riding school, had been lame & come to find out the cause, then there was a large bill they didn't want to pay, so gave up the pony. He was then given to me. He knew slow, stop & bolt in blind terror! Taught me a lot!
Sam/sammy, he was a little 12.2hh heinz 57 type, bay with a white stripe and 2 white socks, he taught me to ride as if i sat wrong, held the reins wrong or anything like that he would literally dump me in a ditch.........passing black thorns on my way to the bottom where i would be found sitting in a patch of nettles! lol
37yrs later and i still miss that little toe rag, i now have a pony who is similar as my 1st pony but i've got him for my kids, i just hope he doesn't do to my kids what Sam did to me, almost a daily occurrence coming off him but we had so much fun together.
14h Welsh E (supposed to be a B but was too big) strawberry roan called Greenlinks Boscadjack or Strawberry at home. He was never really broken in and my farmer father bought him at a sale as a 4 yr old, bought tack the next day and said off you go. He was soooo naughty! Used to bolt, was rubbish in traffic but he could really jump, then i smashed my leg up (car accident) and rather lost my confidence.
Chief and 11.1hh welsh very pretty but a bit of an arse. used to pretend to go lame out on hacks or just lie down when bored, he bucked, biffed, occasionally bit and rarely cantered unless he was bolting home. Mum used to take us out on this stubble field that had a tarmac path next to it ,she would cycle and lead me to try to get him to canter-then he would bugger off towing her along!!He was jsut on loan. First pony we bought was a dartmoor pony called Bisto she was a naughty little thing and her ears looked distinctly like devils horns. She hated games, jumping, cross country and dressage but loved showing. We were told to sell her by everyone in ponyclub but althought she had sweet itch we manged to control it but she never had a full mane, she qualified for Ponies UK every year. She did not do pony club pony classes though. that cross pole used to put her nose out of joint and she would misbehave. We still have her baby who is now 16 years old. I miss her she was SUCH a character! She always used to call to me but hated men and boys which made our bond closer because she didn't like my brothers either!!
A fabulous NF mare called Minni (Silverlea Minstrel Girl).
I was 11 when I got her, she was 2! We'd gone to look at her full brother but ended up with Minni instead as she was so cute (unhorsey parents!). I used to take her out walkies and spend ours grooming, until she was broken in. We did everything, she was a fabulous showjumper, but, she didn't make the height expected and stuck at 13.2 (full brothers around 14.2). By the time I was 14, I had outgrown her but we kept her (lots of friends who were horseless) until she went out on loan to a fabulous family when she was 10. They had a fabulous time with her for 7 years, BSJA and WHP was her forte (they bought her from me after 4 years, very cheaply!) but, life got in their way and they offered her back to me. I wasn't in a position to take her but one of my oldest friends took her on for her daughter as she'd always been mad for her.
Sadly, she'd always suffered with a pollen allergy, so, she was retired aged 20. The following year, she dropped dead in the road being brought in at 6am. She could only go out at night in the Spring because of the allergies. Vet reckoned she'd had a heart attack.
She was an amazing pony, everybody loved her although you took your life in your hands if you fancied riding through Ronson's Field, fart, buck, squeal, then pray you could stop before the road!
My first American pony was a Rocky Mountain pony gelding called 'Trigger'. He was a stunning chocolate palomino or silver dapple palomino (not sure which to describe him). He was a barrel racing pony before my Dad bought him for me back in the mid-70's.
My first UK pony was called Canfield Daisy, 'Daisy' for short. A white-grey welsh section B pony purchased from Charville Riding School in Middlesex.
My horse of a lifetime (bought just after Daisy) was a chesnut Arab gelding called 'Kehshspian' (FM: L974), bought from Terry at Gould's Green Riding School in Middlesex.
monte carlo (carlo ) 12.3hh strawberry roan, exmoor x dartmoor. absolute bugger who taught me and my sister everything. died about 5 years ago in his mid 30's.
houdini - grey 12hh - who got named because the first night he was home not only broke out of his own stable but managed to help my mum's hunter do the same thing - she was easy to spot in the fog the next morning as she was a bright chestnut, him on the other hand............. taught me an awful lot but was a devil to ride and would dump you off him at any given opportunity
Christabel (bella) 14hh Welsh cob. 20year old when i first got her. Taught me how to stick on at gallop when she first bolted with me! loved the bones of her she was fab.
Half a perryditch sixpence (sixpence) 12.3hh reg welsh b show pony, taught me how to ride properly, still have him 10 years old but he's happily retired at 23.
