Have you been cursed with bad luck this year with your horse or had a bad experience or riding incident this year. is there anything you wish you could go back and have done differently?
No really bad experiences. I dropped the reins driving once, and ended up running round after the carriage Pip going in circles. A richard threw a strop in the team and we had to take all of them out.
My mare injuring her tendon sheath/annular ligament in March and being on box rest until July. Only now are we back up to "normal" length hacks (1.5-2hrs) but still only walk/trot and v light schooling until next year.
So will be almost a year of no galloping or jumping for us!
She's been incredibly good though and I have to keep reminding myself it's short(ish!) term pain, long term gain to take it slow and let her build up again.
I got hit by a car in January - some idiot came round the corner to fast and knocked B on her shoulder. Luckily she only needed a couple of weeks box rest and I wasn't hurt as she was v good.
I was on an endurance ride in July, and Spooky wasn't having much fun in the really heavy boggy going. We were taking it really easy and he seemed to brighten up as we got to our final crew point so we decided to continue for the last 9 miles to get home.
We got pretty much as far as possible away from the nearest road, riding with my friend, and all of a sudden spooky stopped, letting my friend and her stallion go on ahead. So i kicked him on and away we went and 30 seconds later he stopped again and started looking at him belly. I suddenly realised that he hadn't poo'd in a while, and had been refusing water (that age old saying - you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink saying sprung to mind!!) and we realised that he was probably colicking.
So we looked ahead and the going was fairly level and even so decided that the best course of action was to keep moving and get back asap. Very scary times as he just wanted to stop and look at his belly all the time and we were in the middle of no where!!
Best moment of this year was when about 15 mins later he let out the most almighty fart, perked up and was sailing along happily in no time!!
Nothing particularily bad this year thankfully. Only thing Id like to re-do is when I came into a trakhener at a BE event and there was a stupid quad (score collector) right beside it - horse busy spooking at it so only saw the fence 2 strides out and cat leaped it landing on it with his back legs. Scraped them all and took me a while to get his confidence back after
January was good for me, then February 3rd was the best day when I went out for a fantastic hack. February 4th Maiden was hopping lame, and I haven't ridden her since March 8th. Diagnosed with torn tendon and cartilage problems in her foot in May. Turned away in July, won't be back until April and only then if I'm lucky! So overall this year has been a bit of a bad experience!
Seven isn't my lucky number! Eight is my favourite number though, so fingers crossed for next year!
Buying a horse I had on loan and the owners pulling out of the sale after i parted with the money! But have two gorgeous, dream horses now which makes it seem like somehow it was meant to be!
Wotsit had a bucking fit (from a walk on a pretty busy road) because he wanted to go home and i didn't. very nearly came off, i was by myself, very very scary, only just got enough confidence to hack him properly again. that happened about 2 months ago.
and i fell off a 12hh pony! (i'm 15, 5 foot and a half tall!) not that bad or anything, just embaressing!
I had my gelding, J put to sleep on March 21st. I kept him at home, and I was alone when I found him lying in the field. I rang the vet but had no one to help me until the vet got there. It was hard to watch him struggling, and not being able to help.
I had a very strong bond with J, and I will always miss him. I'd give anything to have one more cuddle with him.
I was dragged 60' when my horse bolted when I was trying to load him and my hand got caught up in the lunge line - we always used a lunge line to load him as it was easier than a lead rope. I ended up in hospital, needed 3 surgeries to my head and couldn't ride for 3 months. I was taking him to his new home and my new horse arrived at the yard that night. So he was on the yard and I couldn't even go and visit him. I have a scar on my head as a reminder to always wear my hat when loading.
ummm probably wen buster went hopping lame 3 fences from home at bath and west BE comp
.was in between fences with noting mush left to jump. was horrid esp the next day when he couldnt get up, although i think thats more to do with him being a baby and that was his 1st lameness!! bless lol. hes fine now though!
Probably had the worst year ever! After a year of missing events due to my/horse/lorry injuries, I finally topped off the year by breaking my leg badly.
erm, falling off both my loan horses within 4 days in the same field out on a hack
Rodney tripped and sent me flying, indie jumped the 3 ft high 2 1/2 - 3 ft wide hedge separating the bridle path from the field!
Eddie injuring her deep digital flexor tendon and having loads of time off before and during summer hols when i was meant to be having jumping etc lessons on her
Maverick injuring his stifle just as we went back to school.
loads of friends and their horses moved yards at the beginning of 2007 too.
Spotty was sent back to YO's friend without me getting to say goodbye, last time i saw her i has hugging her in a pitch black field.
A horse YO sold (lovely bay showjumper) got kicked in the leg a few weeks after he moved and snapped his leg clean in half - RIP Micky
My father died in December last year then I then I worked for the family from hell , boyfriend spooks horse fracture my finger .
Then as things are getting better I tear my crushete ligament ACL tear , climbing over bags to get off a train at half term !
Cannot ride for at least 3 months loner if I have to havre it repaired if it does not heal , I live in hope of a bettter year next year ?
Had my lovely gelding PTS on March 12th at Newmarket following 12 months of problems. Bought my mare end of April and didn't manage to get on her until October! Can't wait for 2008. Alot of people at my livery yard have had a terrible year. Weird
Have had a terrible year, I saw way too much of my vet
. Every horse/pony on the yard had something wrong with them and all weird things that the vets hadn't seen before
. The worst was my mare fracturing 2 bones in her hock and having to spend 4 months on box rest with a foal at foot. Thankfully they both coped fine, mare went into a fenced in field shelter with a rail for the foal to go in and out of the field. Prognosis isn't good as she'll get arthiritis in the hock and will never compete again
, although she's now back out, in great form and is completely sound so as long as she's happy, I'm happy.
2 horses so far on the yard have been PTS this year and a third is being PTS on thurs. None of them were 'old' infact one was only 6.
As an incident I was involved with, was at a show at home in the summer when trailer pulled out of showground as it did so horse in back started crashing about. Driver stopped immediately and soon became apparent horse (well pony) had slipped over and was stuck under the partition. Thankfully lots of sensible and helpful people about and with a lot of co-ordination we managed to free the horse who escaped with only a few scrapes but was nasty to watch.
when my boy bolted from the stupid cow leaning over the hedge and we ended up outside your yard socksnblaze!! healthwise, the horrendous allergic reaction he had from the equine sunblock. non personally but horsey, a friends new horse, 10 days into ownership, developing an eye infection and needing that eye removed, that was awful.
Thankfully this year (so far touch wood) we've been okay - well apart from my mum is crippled still from car accident last year
Last year was a different story. I was involved in a multiple vehicle pile up which ironically involved a large horse transporter! My mum was injured and even today is crippled from the accident. Then in June my friend was tragically killed and Super was A.I'd on the day of her funeral - don't ask long story - that's why I remember the exact day she was A.I'd
Then my brother was involved in a head on colision in which he was 3 weeks in hospital - Foreigners on the wrong side of the road!! I want to forget about 06!
So big hugs to who are having a difficult year this year

My OH has this injury due to a motorbike crash in July and fracturing/dislocating his shoulder, he is now waiting to have it operated on with the NHS as its not healing properly..he has 75% muscle wasted on that shoulder, awful
Took horsey to uni with me and it ruined both of our confidences decided it wasn't for us as our progress was rapidly going backwards so bought him back home and left uni.
He will no longer happily work in a school since uni and then later this year we had a big incident with a combine harvester and the w*nker farmer down the road and now horse won't go out on the road either.
My horse is a nervous wreck if he as much as sees saddle so he's having the winter off until spring when we are both going to start training again from scratch, Just me and him, fingers crossed all will be well eventually.
