I'm just sorting out the lights for the stables (to run off a battery), and am not sure what wattage to go for! It doesn't have to be hugely bright, but need to be able to see to muck out.

I've never really thought about what wattage the light bulbs in stables are before....can anyone help?

I'm just trying to calculate what capacity will be BEFORE buying the battery so I can buy a suitable one (obv will be getting as high as AH as possible) to last me through the week so any charging can be done at weekends in the winter.

Owners where I am have 60w not allowed anything stronger due to electricity bill!! not too bad a light but would like a brighter light when it's pitch black at night.

Also forgot to say

my stable is 14' x 13' and high in the roof so needs a decent light.

Ah if it helps stables are 12x12....tackroom/store is 8 x 10 but hay goes at the back so would only need to light the front half...I am thinking of going for wall mounted lights so I can have them just high enough, but not too high I am loosing the light into the roof space!

I dont want to go and set everything up and find I don't have enough light!

Ok see what you mean, I suppose if you are having them wall mounted you could get away with 40w if it's only to muck out, but bear in mind if horse is injured at any time and you're trying to change dressings etc in poor light it's a nightmare, having said that, hope you won't have to

It is tricky....I may text a friend at our old yard and ask her to have a look at the light bulbs....they weren't particulary bright but you could see to muck out and change dressings (just!)

I dont want overkill on the lights as I would rather the batt last 2 weeks rather than one, but at the same time need to be able to see!

Thanks, I was looking at bulbs today and thought hang on, how can a 240v bulb run off a 12v battery....

How bright are they, do you have one per stable?

Mine were in a field shelter, but I think the battery I was using was a bit naff cos they struggled to come on sometimes. It says somewhere on that site that 16w fluorescent tube is the same as 100w light bulb, so in theory you should get away with 1 per stable. I had 3 around a field shelter, but it was bigger than a stable. I set it up as my mare was due to foal so needed lights for the CCTV but I don't use it anymore, just use a headtorch instead.

If you haven't already got one, I highly recommend an LED headtorch as well as your 12v system. Either this one:

or the Energiser 6 that is available in B&Q, Tesco etc.
