Well, im surprised that so many people i know still ride despite different illnesses, problems, broken bones, stinking colds etc

What do you battle with every day?

i battle with many problems, hypermobility of all my joints, arthritis, a bulging disk in my back, flat feet, knee caps too small, bruised/inflamed coccyx, ligaments not strong and not holding joints properly and double jointed fingers

and im only 14

but it doesnt stop me riding

Blimey, your not in great shape are you!

Ive got restricted movement in my anckes and should have stopped riding about 10 years ago. Ive also got a knotted muscle in my left shoulder which causes me alot of pain.
Not stopping me though

both my ankles aren't in great shape following numerous ligament damage falls - I must learn to accept that my arse is well padded and stop trying to land on my feet. They don't cause me a great deal of problems though. Shouldn't have drunk all that milk as a kid and the bones woulda just snapped and been a lot easier to heal. Of course like all riders I got back in the saddle way before doctors orders.

I think I've got arthritis in my fourth knuckle joint and left hip. I have got a knackered middle finger joint from a loading incident when it got bent right back, and a dodgy knee ligament. Otherwise I am tickety boo!

I am the same as you, I have HMS in all my joints. I have severe pain in my knees all the time, especially as all the surgery I have gone through just made things worse, and I often have to try to ride with subluxed shoulders etc. The ankle I broke when my knee gave way, is still quite sore after several years and is very stiff when I ride. I literally have pain from top to toe when I am riding, I cant really jump any more, and even just staying on is a challenge! I also have problems just handling our horses because of the HMS, as a tug on a lead rope for any one else would not be a problem, but for me it can mean a subluxed shoulder or dislocated finger.
I do have really bad days when I wonder why I am doing this, but I love our horses SO much I am just not prepared to give up yet!

im in pain from head to toe all the time, i have become immune to pain relief (

) and the slightest jerk on a leadrope can cause weeks of pain. and i seem to have a special relationship with our arena - im usually sitting on my a*se after being dumped in there :P

hehe made this post cause i am vored out of my mind - just got back from physio when i made it and thats when i found out about the disk in my back

im quite lucky tho - my physiotherapist used to ride horses and we usually spend the session rambling on about horses while he makes me do all kinds of weird exerises lol

I have fractured T12 which means I sometimes get excrutiating pain without warning in my back - that was horse related. I got sever whiplash in a road accident 10 years ago that gives me severe headaches & a constantly stiff neck - great when you do dressage & try to do a decent sitting trot! My left knee is very dodgy & often hurts from where I cracked it 3 years ago & did my cruciate ligament at the same time. My ankles are dodgy because they just seem to be - I can't remember ever doing anything to them! My right arm/shoulder/collar bone often plays up from where I cracked that coming off when I was 13. Oh, and I have severe endometirosis which means I have very bad period pains for about 3 weeks out of 4.

If I was a horse I'd have been put out to grass years ago!

My back really...it stopped me doing anything last year for 6 months. Now I just keep going and try to ignore the pain or take painkillers if it is really bad. It is more manageable now and is getting stronger but I have accepted that I will have ongoing problems and just keep going for accupuncture and massage sessions on a regular basis to limit the impact of everything.

You are right Lucy, surgery is not generally recommended for people with HMS. I was only diagnosed with it a year or so ago, and had all the surgery many years before!
Having said that, I may have to have some surgery on my shoulders as no amount of physio will keep them in place, and they have even started subluxing while I am asleep!

Only thing which causes me daily pain is my back. Have a very sharp pain in a shoulder blade all the time and often have a generally very stiff back. I cant remember a time when I didnt have a sore back, its amazing how you just live with these things isnt it! Only other thing which is a slight worry is my knee. It gave way and made the worst crack when I lent down to undo boots after a XC in September and hasnt been right since. Cant complain though as all horsey people seem to have SOMETHING wrong with them!

Goodness all u people deserve a medal!! I have a fake kneecap and v mild arthritus in the joint which only gives me probs when it's wet (like now
smile.gif
) and there are times when I grump abt it
blush.gif
feel v silly abt it now!!

Sympathy for all of you!

Mine is not as bad, but it's kind of ironic...

I am really really allergic to... HAY!

Have been trying to get the yard to do all haynets as I have had the equivalent of a constant awful cold for the last three weeks! I am going to try switching to haylage.

I know it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but hopefully it made some of you giggle
