ive been wondering how much weight tink could carry, friend who did own her said she can (and has ) carried 8 1/2 stone! seems a lot for such a little pony. probably only has someone that weight sit on her rather than ride her i hope..my 8 yr old weighs 5 1/2 stone and i was wondering whether he could ride her.
Standard Shetlands are supposed to be able to carry a man. Remember when the SJ'ers at Olympia used to lark about on the Shetland Grand National ponies?
As Shetlands have good bone and are short coupled they are pretty tough
I know they are pretty strong but some of them are much bigger than your little guy. I think the biggest issue would not necessarily be the weight but the length of leg LOL!!
I'd think he would be good for about 8 stones though? We had a little 10hh boarding shetland here and the little boy was having some trouble with it so I hopped on it's back and did a bit of training. I'm just under 9 stone and he didn't have any trouble with carrying me....he even tried to tonk off with me initially! LOL!!
LOL!! Well I am 5' 8" so all I needed to do was scuff my feet along the ground and we came to a grinding halt
.
I firmly believe that childrens ponies SHOULD be ridden by an adult from time to time, even if it is only for 5 minute stints....otherwise they become incredibly naughty.
A general rule for most natives (of the correct build and bone of course) is at stone of weight per hand of height. Especially shetlands, they're good lttle weight carriers!
Alhought I expect someone weighing 9 stone would not be very comfortable on you shetland!

Well, a local girl wants to ride him, she's about 5'2 and 8 stone. She's a bloomin good rider but her parents can't afford for her to have a pony so I said she could ride him for me, as my eldest isnt that good yet. Thought it would do him the world of good to get off the lR and do more than trot. She could maybe show him a little if she wanted too. But I've not really seen him go off the LR except in an enclosed space and didnt want to end up with this girl getting hurt or tanked off with.
OH said maybe I should see how he went for me as I'm just over 9 stone, so i got on him, and he seemed to enjoy it. Looked at me strangely and then just carried on. We only did a few hundred yards, but he didnt have a problem carrying me. I was ready to leap off at any sign of him not being happy, but he was fine. I won't be doing it again as my legs almost touched the floor, but it made me realise how little credit we give them.
OH and i are now really considering getting him broken to harness so we can all enjoy him. I recon he could pull an adult and a child with ease.

It wasnt the most comfortable ride I've ever had!!
Should be a great arangment.
I agree with Tia, childrens ponies can get very naughty if an adult/experianced older child doesnt ride them form time to time.
The girl gets some more riding, you get a well schooled pony for your little ones.Win win.
ETS Old YO (about 10 stone) used to jump on to school the RS shetlands. They never had any trouble with her weight, a couple would even drag her over jumps if they were set up!

Shetties go for next to nothing. Bring R here and he can ride ours...he's perfect for tiny tots!
Trying to find a RS that will let him have a sit on something, aparently up here they dont take children under 5 *sobs*
No idear why, we used to do "tiny tots" rides from any age, just a 15 min plod on something small and safe and the toddlers loved it.

Not many places take them under 5 for insurance reasons. Best bet would be to get a share in one, and let him plod on that

Ahh, the result of "sue for everything" culture
We really want to move so have that to pay for then will look at cash again and see if a pony would bankrupt us or not, think children get so much from a pony that if we can we will go for it.
He has had a sit on my Aunts great dane, but dont htink that really counts, lol!
Must get a photo next ime, very funny!
