Hi everyone, Im a bit unsure as to what type of rug/s to get for my boy for this winter. He is a traditional cob (with a bit of Dales thrown in for good measure) and is exceptionally hairy, akin to Highland cattle! He really does have the thickest, longest coat I've ever seen on a horse! Due to ill health I didnt have him clipped last year as I wasnt riding him so left him au natural. However this year will be our first (trace) clipped winter together and Im not sure what his requirements are going to be. He wears a 6ft rug and definately wont need a neck attachment due to a very thick long mane but what weight/s do you think hes likely to need through the autumn/winter? Is a 'fleece' lining better than a nylon lining? Im worried about him sweating but the moisture not wicking away from his coat possibly leaving him uncomfortable wet and cold :( im a bit of a rug virgin (even though I've worked with horses but always got told which rugs to put on its a bit different when having to make the decision for your own horse ). I expect a certain amount of trial and error but due to fairly limited funds dont really have money to throw away on trying this that and the other! Also, do people favour changing rugs to stable rugs when bringing horses in for the night or do you keep you outdoor rugs on? My boy is kept in a stable in a barn with 3 or 4 other horses so it is warmer than an outdoor stable. Any advice is greatfully received :D thank you! :)

If he was mine i'd get him a 200g/ 250g filled rug with no neck, in a high denier (to stop ripping). Hadrian Equine (who sell wormers) have these for about £50, and Premier Equine, who I like, have them for about £60. Someone else on here recommends Swish, they are a similar price too. Personally I don't like Masta rugs, and I find Rhinegold etc (bottom end of market) come up skimpy which is no good for cobs.

I don't change mine at night, modern rugs are breathable and waterproof, stable rugs only get filthy. As long as it fits well he'll be fine.
