What weight rug for a clipped shetland?

Any ideas? She's cushings and I'm going to clip her for the first time this year; I've been putting it off as I can't decide what weight rug she'll need. It won't be a standard clip, basically full body but leaving legs and neck on, except for a strip under the mane (yes, I know she will probably look a bit odd but she's not going anywhere ;) ).

I just don't want her to get too hot with an overly thick rug. She lives out 24/7 but has free access to a stable if she wants it.

slightly diff situation but when i've found my shetland too hot etc i have started off with a minimal clip, so neck, chest, extending to part of his belly depending on how his hair is/how much he has been sweating etc. He has then still managed to live out rugless but its really helped him to regulate his temperature better as before, just walking would make him start to sweat up some days.
Could you maybe start off with a smaller clip, then see how she goes? take more off if needed etc?
 
personally i would have a lightweight medium weight and heavy weight thus 12 oz - 350grm when really cold and u can always add a little underrug if ness

if you use dinky rugs they are specially made for small ponies and donkies nice stuff too
 
Thanks posters... Luckilotti unfortunately all the body hair has to come off as she has Cushings and this winter the coat is a lot thicker, she is sweating up even on cold days and when it rains, it turns into a wet mass. And this is a retired pony so not even like she's working up the sweat!
 
I'd be inclined to use a fleece under a light to medium light, so that you can change the fleece to a fresh one, when the other one dries.

I used to work at a rescue centre and we still found that a fair few cushings sufferers still sweat abit. However the fleece worked really well on them.
 
Hi OP... Is your pony on Prascend?
My Shetland was diagnosed in March this year. His only symptom the last 2yrs was being more prone to lami. He started on 1/2 a tablet, which was increased to 1 tablet.
His summer coat was awful this year, and we clipped him out for the first time ever. I was really worried what his winter coat was going to do as the summer one was like thick pig hair.
Anyhow, hes got a lovely coat now, but does have a number of rugs as he's stabled at night all year round and feels the cold.
He has 2 x Amigo lights, 1 x Rambo 350grm, and a Rhino 250grm with high neck - all 4ft 6. I do have some Cuddley ponies unlined and 200grms which I used to use (need to sell these, as I have changed over to the horseware stuff!)
I'm with the other post, take a little off and see bow you get on, also if not on Prascend, may be time to try. I also use Dinky Rugs for muzzles, but never bought rugs from them - my pony is a standard 37" Shetland. Their web address is www.tackandturnout.co.uk
 
Thanks - yes she's on Pergolide, started recently (I can get hold of it rather than Prascend) so hopefully we will start to see some improvement soon. I think the idea of using fleeces under a mw sounds like a good one.
 
Hi im not sure if you have clipped your shetty before so i appologise if you have but the little ones do feel the cold more than clipped larger horses. I clip mine through the summer ( minaiture horse, not shetty for shows ) and he still needs quite a thick rug at certain times of the year when you would not expect him too.

Not sure if youve got a rug sorted but i recently bought the IV horse miniature rugs. Best buy ive ever made as far as rugs go (and ive over 40! )
They are the full combo and i paid £40 each. Cover head to tail!
