My mare is carrying a bit of a belly so working hard on reducing it a bit! I'm just not sure what weight she should be. She's a 15.3hh 3 yr old Westphalien (4 in Feb). She's got a decent amount of bone is is slightly bum high at the moment so hoping for at least another inch in height!

So what do you think she should be before I reveal what she is on a weight tape! Thank you!

This was her earlier this summer.

looking fine from the photo. she is still growing and will continue to grow/fill out/mature til she is 6/7 yrs. would NOT be working hard to reduce her tummy or working hard full stop, as she is only 3 and a half. please give her time to mature naturally.

Hiya, sorry I think you misunderstood DellaMoons post :) I know this poster and This mare is actually currently turned away and not doing anything and I know she is not planning on doing anything until the new year.

She is just worrying about her carrying too much weight as she is growing/maturing and is trying to keep on top of it so not to put any pressure on those growing bones.
:)

hmmm she has a tiny bit of a tummy but i wouldnt worry about it as she doesnt look huge so to speak, but wouldnt be wanting any more weight either ... lovely horse btw :D

A weight-tape will not give you a true answer to your question! They are good for monitoring weight gain, loss and maintenance, and even for a rough guess at weight for worming, but you can't give a firm idea of what each horse should measure on the tape for condition purposes. This is because one 15.3hh may be short-legged with a deep girth, whilst another may be shallow-girthed with long legs - they may be very different on the weight tape but still both in perfect condition!

Much better to condition score - ideally your horse's ribs should be very easily felt, but not clearly visible, plus no cresty neck or gutter down the bottom. The belly doesn't really come into it - this will fluctuate from hour to hour, day to day according to how much fibre is in it!

Thank you for your replies! As Balibee said she has been turned away since the end of June so no work at all until next year! Condition scoring her I can feel her ribs easily, she has no gutter and she has no crest. It is just the belly that I worry about!
