Sorry! I know everyone hates these sorts of posts :( But I could do with an objective opinion!

Shes a 148cm mare, arab cross connie but is built like an old fashioned connie. Solid, really wide across the loins, short legged, loads of bone and generally chunky. Shes just weaned a foal. She was a broodie as shes an ex JA and did a front tendon. She had stem cell treatment, was box rested for 9 months, turned out and tweaked it again. The tendon is thickened but always cool, and shes never had a lame step since.

That was 3 years ago. Current owner bought her, covered her and brought her into work. She got too big to work, foaled down, and came into work again. Got covered, they thought she hadn't caught, so she came into work again. When they realised she was in foal they stopped working her. That was just over a year ago. Shes stayed sound ever since and shes done all sorts, including jumping up to a metre on a poor surface, just a general teenagers pony, ragged about but in the nicest possible way, if you see what I mean?!

The current owners haven't taken as much care as I will to bring her back into work, but they were using 7 stone people to do it. I'm pretty sure I'm too heavy still, its a major bone of contention with my friends and family. Current owner states she will carry 14 stone without an issue, and TBH she does look like a cracking quality, small weight carrier. But taking into account the previous issues what weight of balanced quiet rider would you put on her? It would be for very light work, building up to hacking out 4 or 5 times a week in walk and trot with the odd canter, and hopefully in the summer a prelim dressage test or 2

id say, that a fit and healthy in work horse would take 20% of their own body weight so as she isnt in work properly yet and my have issues but unlikely probs around 15% of her own weight. probably around 12stone would be fine for now but she could carry upto 14 when shes fit and in work. im only guessing her weight to be around 500kg but she may be lighter as my 16hh heavy but not cobby mare if 560kg

Shes probably pushing 500kgs, but should be closer to 425/450kgs. She looks fatter than she is as she has a baby belly and is 'flabby' I know I'm being over cautious, I just really rate this mare! and I've waited a VERY long time for her. I would never forgive myself if I broke her because I'm fat! I've already lost a stone and a half, so not much to go :D New horses are the best incentive to diet :D

I was thinking 12stone7 stood on the scales with my tack in my hands, so long as we took it very slowly.

NP: Lol! but this is honestly a serious dilemma! I know it sounds like a troll thread, but its not :)

surely the OP can work out if she too fat to ride the pony?... no?

hence my referall to PF 's thread.....

these types of thread are, TBH getting tiresome

Well dont read them FFS! and for the record I wanted some impartial opinions! Why open the thread if you have nothing constructive to say???
I was 15 stone and a bit when I paid my deposit, and I have lived on soup and not much else for ages now as I want to do the right thing by the mare! I choose to buy her, therefore its my responsibilty to lose enough weight to ride her! I have no doubt she'd have carried me at 14 stone + and would def carry me now at 13stone 7 give or take, but that wasn't the point of this post! I want her to stay sound and not suffer because I'm a fat blimp :D I'm usually on the higher side of weight carrying abilities, but there is other issues here, hence why I asked for advice!

Forgive me Nag & Dog, I asked for advice to help me decide what was the maximum weight for a horse that has some issues, in order to do the best by her :( I gave a lot of information and was asking for opinions, but I've obviously annoyed people! I'll retreat back into my fat shell and crack out the cream cakes as the mare can clearly carry me even if I put on weight! :( Please bear that in mind when I post saying I'm 18 stone and have been riding a 14.2hh connie x arab with previous tendon issues whos beena broodie for a while who has now done her tendon again!

14.2 of solid but not cobby pony? I'd ride her but not for long until she's fit. I'm 11st. I wouldn't be putting anything near 14st on even when fit - she COULD carry it but it'll be hard work for her so why should be have to?

I'd say 12st of rider would a fair and humane upper limit for her to have to carry regularly for 'proper' riding. (and her 1st+ tack on top of that). 13st for short gentle hacking whist she gets fit wouldn't do her any harm. Just bear in mind that she's not carried weight on her back for a while and it will take her a long time to build up the muscle under the saddle to support a rider, especially after having a foal and all the stomach muscles stretching.

Congrate on loose the weight BWT! :D

I suspect that the OP does actually know what she's doing, but is looking for confirmation that she is correct in what she is doing, not sarcasm.

Well done on the weight loss - I admire you immensley.

Take no notice Obicat. Some people seem to use this forum as an excuse to be as confrontational and rude as they can manage on a daily basis. Don't feed the troll by replying.

Huge congrats on the weight loss, its my aim to be able to ride my Sec D before I get too old!

To be honest I would worry about anyone heavier than 11st absolute max

My reason is that I had a WC 14.3h good stocky well built good bone etc

he developed an injury to his stifle. I was around 12st at the time and he would not stay sound.
I got someone who was less than 9st to ride him and he has stayed sound ever since, that was 8yrs ago

and do i care?..not at all...

Why buy something too small to carry your weight? I don't get it... Different if you already have a horse and the weight creeps on but surely if you are heavy anyway sense would dictate to buy a weight carrier???

Edit - I have a 14h2 welsh x arab and feel at 10st4 I am the max she should be carrying (and I am still dieting). I don't see the point in putting the horse under pressure when there are other horses that could carry the weight comfortably.

Admirable of you though to lose weight for her - I know how hard it is...

i stick by what i said. she needs u skinnier when back into work under 12 stone but she will take upto 14stone once shes fit and its better she has to put up with a tiny bit more weight that is well balanced and looks after her properly then she is mistreated somewhere else

Chill. I suspect the point is that we can't see what the pony is like, we can't see what your riding is like. If you have a specialist equine vet and an instructor then you are far better off asking them to comment on whether she's up to your weight yet. IMHO she sounds as though she needs to slim down more than you as she's carrying her own excess weight all the time (TBH as are you and I) BUT I can't say for certain because I haven't seen her.

Internet freedom of speech law requires that people are obliged to comment -however negatively- on every thread online

Or at least that's the way some people think.

Ignore the rude posts, don't reply to them.

Well done on loosing weight, but don't be too extreme with your diet, you'll end up putting it all back on plus some (been there, done that - twice!) these days I exercise and try to eat better than I usually would (more fruit and veg, cook my dinner from scratch)

Good luck with your horse! :)

You say she is built more like a connie, and if so, then yes she is probably up to your weight.
If she was fit as a flee, and hadn't had previous issues then I would say 14stone as a maximum...
Its more the tendon injury that concerns me, but if as you say it won't be overly strenuous, then I dont see a problem :)

Just to update, and another annoying question :D

Shes here now and she is utterly FAB! We all adore her! Shes even converted my sister to ponies :D Anyway, I'm still 13 st 7 ish. I wont 'ride' her till I hit 12 stone give or take. But, would I be too heavy to sit on her? And by sit, I mean, just sit on her bareback and stationary? Shes been here a week and she has been marched out in hand for between 20 and 40 minutes twice a day. Shes very stocky without being cobby. Shes closer to the build of a section D than anything else. Shes been out at grass 24/7 so has reasonable muscle tone, apart from the baby belly.

I can wait until I've lost enough weight to actually ride her,( eta 6 to 8 weeks from now)! I just really want to sit on her to get a bit of a feel for how I will feel on her height wise etc after a few weeks of ribbing about adults, all 5ft5 of me, lol, on ponies! I've waited months for her to arrive and if its a no go then I will wait till I've lost more weight, but I'd really love just to hop on for a minute...

Can someone please tell me....

Why will 560kg pony carry more/same weight rider as a 500kg pony of the same size?

Moreover, what has the pony's weight got to do with it?

A 10 stone person would find it easier to give you a piggy back that a 6 stone person - same idea... The more you weigh the more weight you can carry (if you have a really muscley 6 stone person they would be able to carry more than an unmuscley 6 stoner)

I love the comment 'Don't feed the troll'... this is so apt for those people who use this forum to be know-it-alls and nasties. Aren't human beings funny things?!

I say hat off to all the people who use this forum for the good it can do :-)

What a strange post - all the comments on this thread have been helpful so far (maybe not what everyone wants to hear, but certainly helpful)

Nearly all of them, but there was definitely one that was unhelpful. Thanks to everyone else though :)

Ahh - you get one of those on every forum. Just ignore them and they can look silly all by themselves. There is a forum where I go where someone is brilliant at dealing with them - to the point I quote them 3 times in my siggy!

when i see people type "ibtl" here on NR my eyes/brain interpret it as "i'm a noob"

Everytime I see you type "FAIL" I hear "waaaaaah"

Welcome to the internet, chose either this padded helmet, or box of tissues.

No matter what forum you post on, there is some smart-ass lurking in the shadows feeding on random people.
Nice to meet you.
