Hi I was just wondering whether anyone could help me..

i went to see a mare the other day to try and buy and really liked her, However its more money than ive ever had to pay out for a horse for me, but iam willing to pay for the right one.

anyway this is it.......... 6yo mare out of dressage stallion stravinsky, very pretty, excellent paces and a nice but green jump. the owner only does dressage but has now pregnant so will have no time and needs the money. shes up for £4,750 (inc 2 rugs and bridle). Do people think this is about the right price or a bit steep?? any ideas what price i could start from?

Thankyou because im rubbish at pricing!

I would go in with a £3750 offer without bridle and rugs and see what happens....has she been placed out doing dressage? If not, then it's all hearsay as to whether she'd actually get placed!

Her breeding is good which will help the price along a bit

I think £4,500 would be a fair offer. (But I could be wrong.....

I think that sounds like a very good price for a well bred young dressage mare, who, with some time, could be a very nice sjer//eventer. As above, if you want her woithout tack and rug, offer 4k. With i'd say you're still looking at 4.5k, she is obviously priced to sell as the lady is pregnant and therefore probably will not be willing to budge on price much, as in her mind she's already up at a good price. I'd say she thinks she'll get 4.5 for her. Offer much less than 4k and I think it's rude.

Hard to say - what has she actually done? Has she competed, in dressage or any SJ or anything? If so, what results and what level has she been trained to?

I can't give a fair estimate without knowing that really, but assuming she is nicely schooled but still quite green, and not really done much competition wise, I'd say 4k is a reasonable offer to go in with.

Well she has done a couple of local dressage tests, not sure how she did, but the owner said she would bring them next time we visit... and Jumping wise shes done pratically nothing, as owner is fairly nervous in that respect.

Thanks for all the advice!

In that case I'd offer probably 3750, to pay 4k. Unless she is just that spectacular a stamp of mare, a couple of local dressage shows and no jumping for a 6yr old is not something that would impress me.

Aye, but it's a well bred, green young horse. They've started her education and have slowly brought her on, to some people that's a good thing! if you don't want to jump then there's no problem... if you do, offer 4k. 3750 is a thousand less than the asking price.

Yes it is, but I think that without tack and rugs its a very fair offer. I haven't seen the horse of course, and yes she has good breeding, but that doesn't necessarily mean she has top class quality.

Assuming she is just a fairly nice 6yr old, who hasn't done anything much, I wouldn't personally want to pay more than 4k.

Just offer her 4K but dont say owt about bridle and rugs as two second hand rugs and a bridle arent worth 750 !! lol

If someone offered me a price for my horse and said 'I dont want the tack so here is my offer etc ' I'd think it laughable - to think you can use tack as a negotiation esp when its not a saddle.

Best of luck

Yes it is a £1000 less but horses aren't selling at the moment!

good correctly priced horses are

if this horse is nice i think anything below £4k would be insulting & expect to pay up to £4.5K

i told the offerer to go knickers when i was offered 20% less for a horse i sold , i sold to viewer no at a small reduction on asking price
