What would be a reasonable offer?

I've been loaning a mare for approximately three years now and I'm looking to make an offer to buy her. My reason for doing this is because I am going to university (hopefully) next autumn and it would absolutely kill me to have to give her back to her owner and be unable to loan her again once I've finished the two year course. I would want to loan her out myself while I'm at uni, the loan depending on how much work I can fit in whilst doing my course - it could be a full loan or even just a part loan (I will be doing a paramedic course and they are incredibly hard to work around). And I've already had people (who I know and trust) interested in loaning her from summer next year.

The thing is, I have no idea how much to offer or if she'd even sell her to me. In the three years that I've had her, I've never met the owner. My friend used to loan her before I did and I took her straight from his yard to mine. She doesn't seem particularly interested in her and I am the one who contacts her to let her know how we are getting on and that all is okay. I've paid for all her bills and such with no help from the owner (not that I ever demanded or expected any). I have some tack of hers and a rug or two but I have replaced all of these things (saddle included) over the years and no longer use them so I would have no problem taking them back to her.

The mare in question is a 15 year old, 14.2hh, Welsh D, no vices, always in good health, rarely lame, eats me out of house and home, does her job and is quite happy to plod around on a hack or go to local shows. We don't do a lot but we have a lot of fun and I certainly consider her mine even if she isn't legally. I couldn't stand to let her go, even when she's old and creaky and needs her carrots cut into little pieces.

So what would you, lovely people of H&H, think would be a reasonable offer for her? I don't want to con the owner or anything but I too don't want to be conned and end up paying more than I should. Obviously I don't expect to not have to discuss this with the owner but I want to know a kind of ball park figure of what I should expect to be paying.

Ps. I am aware this makes me sound quite young but I am 21 and perfectly capable!

Thanks all!

See I would have thought she'd be worth a bit more than the other two posts as she sounds quite saintly! I'd have said £1500 if you were buying her flat with no previous history as the age wouldn't put off a lot of people who want a nice do-anything type, and 15 isn't really old, unless you're a high mileage competitive type. I'd expect to pay that round here, if not a bit more - and I'd expect an ad to say £1800.

Having said that, I'd start low and work your way up - you have a history, owner doesn't sound bothered at all so might think it's easy money and all over with. Especially in the run up to Christmas. Good luck, I hope you get her!

Start at 800, then you have room to play going up to 900, 1000 etc, remeber she is who she is because of what you have done with her and owner obviously wasnt looking for an investment either. Work on the how much you love her, dont include the how well she is doing at sj etc

What about tack and rugs etc? Have you bought them or did they come with her? With tack & wardrobe I'd go up to £1500, without I'd offer £1000 and be prepared to go up to £1250. Point out to her that she will only drop in value as she gets older (and she could end up with a 22year old - or older - horse with health issues etc - back to look after) Make her an offer she can't refuse -not just in monetary terms!

Thanks for all your input guys! Turns out I had nothing to worry about!

I finally plucked up the courage to ask last night and asked her what she wanted for her.
And she said I could have her for £1000 because home is more important than price.
I am so so happy! :D My girl can now officially be...my girl!

Thanks again all of you!

I'd contact the owner.
Tell her your thoughts and see what they say.
Don't menion a price yet.

I think the ower should gift the horse to you.
They don't seem to bothered and have been without her for the 3 years and more your friend had her.

Or a small amount would be fair.

Although that's how I think the world should be and how nice people should be!

I know how people can change and get nasty and greedy when it comes to money!

Lol I was going to say start at £800 and hope to get her for £1,000 but I see you've already done the deal. Well done and I hope you'll have many more happy years with her :smile3:
