i am considering putting my mare in foal, (this is my decision so don't shot me down in flame) she is 15.3 full tb, i want to breed from her to have a foal that i can produce myself and keep to possible event or sj, ideal i would like to put her something that will make 16.2hh and was think possible ID, what do TB cross well with.

p.s. IF i decide to do this i will be fully commited to it and will have researched every avenue and make sure i can afford every eventuality, so please don't judge me this is only an option i am considering.

ID yes, most definately. Or another TB. Or even a Section D.....

If you pop this in Breeding you may get more responses.

How exciting.

I was thinking Connemara before I saw the height you wanted. Id still go with Connemara if you didnt mind something about 15.2hh but good enouh for decent affiliated competition. Otherwise ID for more or less a larger version of the Connie x TB

I 3rd (I think) the connemara vote (although maybe cos I have one!) Mine is 16hh but I think they have great trainable temperaments and have the pony quick brain!

However, ID x TBs are traditionally very good solid crosses and make good sport horses. We also have a TB x Andalusian (with a bit of NF on his mother's side I think!) He has a fab temperament, LOVES his jumping and at 16.1hh/16.2hh is plenty tall enough.

Ooh it's a tricky one isn't it! If it was me I'd go for this one

But that's cos I am a sucker for coloureds!

I saw the height bit oops sorry GwenLP! But in my previous post today 'Guess the height' some thought I was 5ft 3 on my 15hh connie lad when I'm 5ft 8, so they do take up leg well. I think you could get a 15.2hh out of your mare and a full up/overheight connie stallion.

As well as ID, I think one of the members on here has a stunning Friesien X TB or you could go exotic and have a lipizzaner or Spanish X.

I would look more for a stallion who really complements your mares' strengths and helps address any weaknesses she has than breed. Also I would go for temprement (sp?) above everything else, so look for something whose offspring are competed succesfully by amatuers. I would really go on recomendations - which of your friends young horses do you really like and who are they by? Also look on the BE website at the stallions list to get an idea which stallions are producing lots of event horses. Good luck!

thanks for that will love in to all of them cross, if he wasn't 15.3 i would love to put her to rollestones ghost he is so stunning

i have to say it there isn't a horse that i know that i would say i would want a horse from the same bloodlines, in fact the best horse i have ever ridden is my boy and i don't want a full TB either i definatly want a cross.

thanks for all the advice i'm off to do some research.

ID x TB are fab. Second choice is Welsh x TB. Either way make sure you choose a stallion based on your mare and not because he looks good! Balance your mares traits with the stallion. i.e. think about conformation, temperament etc.

ID or welsh cob, make very useful riding horses, i know of some nice welsh D stallions!!

must be a very personal thing - Id avoid a sec d at all costs, all the ones I know are awful!

ID x TB would be my favourite cross, my old chap was smashing, had a jump to die for and was becoming a lovely horse til he fell to pieces

Have replied in breeding...but Id go for a big boned WB or a trakkie...but uttermost you will need a stallion to compensate and improve your mares (possible

) weak points

thanks for all the comments this is her

this photo was taken in april and she is much better weight and condition now (i don't have any more recent ones of her)

The best TBX crosses are New Forest, Irish draught and shire IMO. Perosnally for a first foal and youngster to produce I would cross with a pony so my recommendation would be a full up New Forest stallion like Applewitch Pure Magic or Burley Halmark. I would think height wise you'd be talking 15.2HH so if 16.2HH was very important to you then I'd cross with a draught like Touch stone Silver Laughton (He's 16.2HH) and has lovely draght comformation. You haven't told us much about the mare, what are her paces like? Her jump? And tempeterment? It's really important you match the stallion with the mare but I'm pretty certainyl if you put her to a NF or ID then you'd lose some on those annoying TB faults, bad feet, over at the knee, bad doers, no brain cells...!!
