When I first get on my rising 6 year old, she is really buzzy and doesn't ever want to walk. Normally I let her trot and canter or trot on a hack until she settles, then she is happy to walk. So, should I let her have her own way? Or insist that she walks? She doesn't spook, buck, spin, bolt etc.. just wants to go everywhere at top speed! She is totally controllable, just buzzy. Any advice please? Thanks

It depends what you want to do? Do you compete anywhere you have to park in a small lorry park and would be a danger to other people if you have to rush through?
Really praise her when she does walk.
I think you really should try to get her to walk when you want her to.
Could you school her before going on a hack? Then she'll be settled and maybe walk as soon as you set off.
Does she stand still when you get on?

I have started to school her before hacking out which helps. I can always control her and she is fine at events, in fact better behaved than at home! I have worked on getting on her endlessly and she mainly stands now.

Could you school her more on your hacks? So when she gets onward bound circle her round until she gets a good walk then praise her loads and go straight. You may end up going in circles for a while though! The message seems to have finally sunk into one of mine that i dont like the route march back from the schooling field and if he wants to get back then he needs to walk nicely.

can you loose school, if shes good with voice commands i find this really good for loosening and warming them up also if she wants to have a hooley she can do it with out you on her back, or maybe lunge her, let her have the firtst five minutes to get it out of her system then get her listening to you, asking her to walk halt trot etc it may take some time for her to settle but if you do it regulary enoguh you will probably find she will take less time to settle each time you do it. Then hopefully she will have got rid of the fizz and learn to walk when you ride her, does that make sense

Dizzyf, I have tried a calmer but it didn't do anything, perhaps I should try another one? She is only fed a handful of chaff with a vit supplement.

Sonnysunshine, I can't looseschool in our arena and i used to lunge before i got on which really helped until she fell over and injured her stifle tearing around! The surface isn't great so i don't want to risk it!

Rebels, I will try the circling!

Thanks all

oh thats a shame i was thinking if you could get her to repsond well to voice commands then she would hopefully listen to you when you get on her

what about just walking her in hand or long reining her a couple of times a week untill she listening then lunge on a small circle just walk and stand commands untill she gets the hang of it, it will take time but it will be worth it in the end, its difficult i know my old horse is a bit fizzy somtimes and it takes him ages to settle, everything has to be slow and calm he gets the hang of it occasionally

good luck dont give up somthing will work its just finding what it is

Thanks Sonnysunshine, I hadn't thought of just walking her on the lunge or long reining, I am prepared to do what it takes so I will try!
