What would you do if your horse..

My competition horse has been written off

Hence I haven't ridden since August '09, or properly since Autumn 2008

Absolutely no way will I be parting with her, so I go without until I am in a position to buy another (hopefully this year). That's horse ownership!

loan the happy hacker and loan another with dressage potential and cross fingers it all works out!

Good god you lot have got it on you at the moment I was wondering why I hadn't bothered posting in a while lol !

Sorry I just don't see the problem in breeding from a horse that you love to get another horse to love ! For me its not about winning or completely correct confirmation - if a horse can do its job then what is the problem ?

Perhaps you also believe in castrating men and keeping the best stock for breeding from but is that not elitism ???

Did you have anything constructive to say either or was it just to be a cow ? ... Oh thought not !

Look back in my history I never snap at anyone, but seriously - play nice girlies ! It's like the worst livery yard in the world here sometimes !

Do you really think it's ok to breed from a horse just because you love it?

What a terribly naive view. Neither can you compare horse breeding to people - we don't just let them pick their own mates do we?!

Lordy!

Have you ever been to the sales and seen some of the rubbish that's doing the rounds? Poor horses, badly put together, probably struggling to stay sound, all because some muppet didn't think about what they were breeding from. It happens time and time again, people get a horse that they can't do anything with - be it due to unsoundness or behavioural, and think "ah, nothing else I can do with it" so they let it run with an equally sub standard stallion, all for a foal that will get them a few hundred and continue the same miserable life cycle

I did similar.... Bought a horse to jump and discovered he has arthritis in fetlock....

He is only 11 now and was only 8 when this was discovered, so bit my lip (and lost my confidence) and hacked happily.

I love my horse more than jumping, so, he was the winner all round, especially as he has told me that he is going to live to at least 30 just to spite me

Although after this weeks stable destruction, I am not so sure!!!

What's he done to himself? Is it something that will improve over time so you could compete again, even at a lower level? There are lots of people who are more than happy hacking out rather than competing so why not avertise him? Maybe you could offer him for loan to stay at current yard. if you find someone, once you know they are looking after him and you can trust them you might feel better about selling him?

Another option, is there anybody on your yard who's horse is too much for them and they are looking for a safe horse to hack? If so, maybe you could do a loan swap.

Good luck

Blah blah blah - that wasn't what I said was it , if you actually read my earlier post it says that if a mare is competing at a good standard of dressage then gets injured what is wrong with putting it to a great stallion ? go on pray tell

He has done a ligament in his stifle, which will be very tricky with dressgae, with asking him to use his back end properly and sitting more, it could strain it again very easily.

He is still lame at the moment, box rest never worked for him. So were at the point of not knowing what else to try, other then resting him for a year and see if it fixes itself. I guess time will tell x
