horse you paid owner to ride was lame but its non- riding owner was reluctant to get the vet out... (no contract signed)
What would you do if

Stop riding it.
Owner may well be experienced enough to know when to call the vet and when not to.....

Umm, tricky one. If i was very worried, i.e no obvious sign of what's causing the lameness or horse was crippled, i'd get the vet out myself and pay, provided the owner didn't mind. If not too worried, i.e could just be a knock, slight lameness, then id do things like give the horse a break, hosing down swellings etc.
