We had a horse which was sold to a my mums friend as my mum couldnt 'click' with him, we brought the guys mare back which i thought was in exchange but obviously wasnt we brought her back as the man who owned her didnt have enough room for her at the time but now has larger premises. I rode this mare for about 3 weeks then she came into season & with the mans permission we put her in foal & subsequently have a colt, the problem is the man has only been to check shes ok twice once to check on her & the second to look at the colt, the man mentioned last that he was thinking about selling her (he has the passport) & asked if i wanted to buy her, i am a little unsure what to do as i wouldnt mind having her but feel that i shouldnt be exchanging any cash as i have had her 3 1/2 years, i have paid for the farrier every 8 weeks, bought new rugs, stabled her in winter & even had a vet bill for £700! What would you do in my situation bearing in mind the total ive spent on this mare is over 3k and this guy hasnt room for her as he has 12 other horses!?
 
I would speak to him to clarify the situation.

Just because you have shod, rugged, cared for this horse for 3+ years, it doesn't make her yours. Just think how many outraged owners there would be if people who loaned horses thought like that :eek:.

I agree that having a foal out of her complicates matters.

Tell him how you feel and where you think you stand, see what he says :)

I understand that she doesnt belong to me im just frustrated & feel like ive had the p)*s taken out of me when he asked me he only had two horses at the time (the one we sold him & another mare) he has purchased extra land & bought more horses since & tbh i dont think he wants her back as she is a bit of a quirky mare & not trusting until she knows you the colt foal hus ours the original agreement was that she would go back in foal obviously at our expense but the guy changed his ming & said he wasnt sure if he wanted her back in foal for the following year, people have been saying to send him a bill for keep as the original agreement with my mum (not me) was short term ive paid for her keep ever since!
 
Im just so soft i dont want to upset anyone & dont want this guy falling out with my mum but something needs to be done i want to keep the mare but dont see why i should exchange cash when it was only a temporary agreement & 3 1/2 years later shes still here!
 
To be fair it doesnt sound like you have got to the bottom of what the agreement was at the start as I am guessing your mum dealt with it all...

You say you thought the horse was in exchange for your original one but then say you asked permission to put it in foal and then that the agreement was temporary

Not having a dig at you but if you have nothing in writing or a receipt I think you are on dodgy ground with this

Will your mum intervene and put her view of the situation across to the chap maybe?

One of my childhood ponies was out on loan for 14 years to the same family, they paid all costs and took it all the way through pony club with three different children and improved him no end but I never felt obliged to hand it over to them, a loan is a loan after all
