Right, I keep my horse where I work on the livery yard and a few weeks ago a friend of mine asked if I would look after her mare whilst she was on holiday. As I do a bit of freelance work looking after peoples horses, she said she would pay me and so I agreed to do it for her. The horse is stabled 24/7 with a few hours turnout a day, same as mine, so obviously with a very full time job it was a fair bit of extra work, especially as it needed to be exercised every day. When she got back she presented me with £20!!!now, I usually charge about £80-£100 per week for this sort of job and although I said I would do mates rates I did expect a little more! Anyway, decided to let it go, for an easy life and all that........
3 days after she got back, she fell off her horse and ended up in hospital with "suspected" serious injuries. After staying in overnight, she was let out with just very bad bruising to her thigh, shoulder and back and told to take it easy for a while. I offered to help out with her horse for a few days as she was obviously pretty stiff, and, after all, I would hope she would do the same for me, if the situation ever arose. That was nearly two weeks ago now, and I am still doing the horse!! She has been telling people at the yard that she has fractured her pelvis, which im sure cannot be true as she told me it was just bruising, and comes to the yard every day, hobbling round whilst I do all the work! Not once has she offered to pay me in anyway and to be honest I think im being a bit of a mug!! She seems perfectly capable of filling haynets, walking to the field and dragging water buckets, just not getting up in the morning to muck out! To make matters worse, I drove past her in the village today, walking perfectly normally!! What do I do?! She is (I think) a good friend and I dont want to cause any offence, but a) I would like a bit of recognition for the work ive done for the last few weeks, and b) If she can manage everything else, surely she can manage to get up and muck out!! What are your thoughts? Am I just being selfish?!

I would just say to her, are you up to doing your horse now as Im finding it difficult with working full time to do yours aswell as my own. I probably couldnt be bothered making a big deal out of it so would just calmly say something like that

Oh come on, of course you are not being selfish! She is using you, a freelance worker for free labour. Stop doing her work! Yes, she is a friend, but really, it is not your job to be doing all of that. Hope you get it all worked out.

Thanks guys, thats kind of what I thought, im just a very non confrontational person, which I really need to snap out of!! going to ring her tonight and tell her that I cant do it anymore.

i would never take advantage of my good friends, there is no way i would pay so little, friend or not, mates rates are not that low i am afraid, it does sound like she is taking advantage
i would just say you cant do it any more

Have done it!!phoned her and told her I cant do it anymore. She sounded a little shocked but I swear she has a hide like a rhino! She just said, thanks for all your help, see you in the morning! so no mention of payment, but at least ive got the little bit of free time I have back!!

Glad you did it! I had the same with a friend who usedto get me to jump her horse. She didn't want anyone else to jump him as he could be a bit naughty. But it got to the point where she would pay people to ride him during the week and expect me to drive 12 miles and ride him for free. The next time she asked if I would jump him at a show I said I would only if she paid my fuel! I haven't jumped him for 18 months but its no skin off my nose!
