My mare's small sarcoid just under her eye has suddenly blown up due to the flies, so I have been using Colgate Duraphat 5000 ppm Toothpaste and a full fly mask.

Now the question is......Should I treat it with bloodroot ointment whilst the sarcoid is open or do I wait till the Autumn?

I would continue with the toothpaste. Bloodroot ointment is very harsh and I would be worried about it getting rubbed into the eye regardless of the facemask. I understood that most vets advice was not to use the aggressive creams and ointments on the face due to the risks to the eyes.

Its not right near her eye its more under it say an inch, just can not believe how its such a mess due to flies, why do they attack them, do they smell or something? They use maggots for ulcers in hospitals?

It will be a mess because the toothpaste is breaking it down not the flies. Keep applying and use the facemask 24/7 would be my advice. The flies will obviously be attracted to the messy flesh. If you are really covering it with toothpaste and leaving it on as is suggested then it should act as a barrier to the flies.:)
Also an inch is no distance from the eye. My mare rubbed her facemask off last night. They only have to rub on a leg to smear cream into the eye.

What would I do? Get the vet out! Has your vet given you bloodroot ointment to treat a sarcoid on the eye / does your vet know you are treating one there with it? Honestly, eyes are far too delicate to be messing around with toothpaste and other stuff. This is one for your vet, not an internet forum.

Hi
I have to agree with Chestnut cob, I'd get the vet out pronto.
