What would you do with your horses if ww3 happens

Mine are at home so wouldn't change anything until we were directly affected.

We do live very close to the SAS base though, so we might be caught up in the initial enemy hit list!

Depends on the sitch doesn't it - if we were evacuated to somewhere (which is a situation I've thought about this a few times for no particular reason) - we have 11 horses (3 of which are minis) and 15 acres of mixed grazing and dirt/rubble walkways so there is potential to open all the fields, take all shoes off, leave water running in a big tub and buy in as much hay as possible to put around and just hope they'll survive. Other option is to brand them and drive them to a National Park and turn them out.

We can grow food at the yard etc so if we weren't evacuated, I'd probably take a caravan/camper van up there, stock up on tinned foods, get a load of chickens and just live there and look after the animals for as long as we can!

Loving reading what others would do!

I’d also be worried about access to painkillers and drugs. Neither of ours are on anything yet, but both dogs are on a cocktail of arthritis meds and joint supplements and I guess they’d be increasingly difficult to get hold of.

There was a post from Ukraine early on about vets not having access to sedatives and anaesthetics.

So the worry about supply lines would come into it as well.

If the button is pushed we would be found in the stable with the rest of our critters and a very decent roja in hand ! I do think that the folk in charge are mad but not that mad that they would end the world (but I do have a few bottles in just in case :D }

Mine are also at home and I'd be surprised if war came to where we live!

If things got dangerous though I'm not really sure what we'd do with them - we don't have a box to take them away anywhere to turn away and we live in a semi-built up area. I suppose just do our best to keep them safe. I can't imagine a reason we would put them down unless we had to move abroad for some reason and I think I would do all I could to bring them with me before that happened.

Probably nothing, try to carry on as best we could. We’re close to a nuclear depot so if it got hit we’d probably all get wiped out together.

Pretty miserable thoughts. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

I would PTS the fuzzball as that’s a possible outcome of everything going on with him atm anyway.

If it looked like a situation where it would be unsafe for him to have outside time anymore I would PTS Horrid as well as he’s always made it very clear that’s a non negotiable in his life and he’s not a fan of change & chaos.

The Hooligan I probably would try not to for the selfish reason that having him around may stop me going mad & dogs are a bit more adaptable. (This is perhaps with the thought that I could secrete a syringe of euthatal somewhere for emergency use…)

If it looked like things were getting bad I'd PTS the one on daily painkillers as I wouldn't want to have to try and get more but I do get 6 months at a time so I could see what the situation is rather than make an instant decision.
The other 2 I could release into nearby woods if I absolutely had to.

I've no idea what's happening as I live in my bubble, don't watch news and just carry on otherwise I stress, have panic attacks and make myself ill.

With the tech we have now WW3 would be blaring people into oblivion with nukes so we would be here one minute and gone the next.

I honestly don’t give it head space, what will be will be and what won’t won’t. I spend too much time worrying about things that I can’t do anything about in my own tiny life bubble so I don’t add the world stage to it.

This. WW3 actually affecting our daily lives would be massive bombs and likely nuclear ones. Personally, I live in the Scottish Borders, with possibly just enough distance from Edinburgh and Rosyth to be safe from bombing.

The biggest impact would be electricity, food supplies, etc likely becoming unstable. We have a wood fire (handy when we’ve had power outages) so we’re fairly well prepped for that. Food (both human and horse) would be a bigger issue. I keep my mare on a farm though, well out of the way and with plenty of hay and straw to keep them going if needed.

But realistically, it’s not worth worrying about - if it’s going to be that bad that I’m considering what to do with my horse, we’re probably getting nuked.

What makes people think there would be enough drugs and vets to do all the PTS?

Good question. But drugs and vets aren’t the only way to do it. I keep mine on a farm and the farmer has a gun, so that would be how we’d do it if the world was in full turmoil. I’ve got Sedalin, so they would be sleepy beforehand and not be as aware of what was happening.

If we had access to vet or knackerman but not drugs, and I wasn’t on a farm with a gun, I’d be asking for the penetrating captive bolt.

But my mare is 17 - if she was a fit, young, good doer I’d be tempted to turn her loose. Either the world will come to its senses and you’ll be reunited by microchip and passport details (I actually do update mine!) one day, or in a post apocalyptic world a sound fit horse will be caught and looked after by somebody who needs the transport. You always hear stories about US horses getting turned loose in bad hurricanes and surprisingly people mostly get reunited with them afterwards.
