We still have our childhood pony, who is in her 20s and has arthritis, initially we were advised to just walk her out quietly but every time she would be horribly stiff and lame the next day, so we retired her and she's been happier than ever as a field ornament. Both my sister and I had outgrown her, and I keep my horse at a different yard, and my mum found a 11yr old girl who just wanted to be around ponies and groom them, which is great. So she took her to the stables at the weekend and came back saying the girl was too tall....Too tall to groom a pony??? Anyway, turns out she has been told and believes that Maddy should be ridden again and she wants to find someone to do that. Both my sister and I were absolutely livid and tried to explain that not only is she not upto that anymore, she's only 13hh and finely built and with back problems, so really would need someone very small and light, but she is a very temperamental ride and my mum just cannot understand that you can't just stick anyone on her, even if she was perfectly fit.

What would you do? It's really worrying me that she will do something stupid and injure Maddy or whichever child she puts on her. I just can't seem to phrase things in a way she understands and she just ends up screaming at me for disagreeing with her

Who told her your mum she could be ridden again? Any possibility you could get a vet or physio out to have a look at her and confirm that the pony was unsuitable to be ridden as it would only add to her problems? Your mum wouldn't be able to argue then! hee hee (I have a mum who can be similar - nothing you say seems to get through!)

My mum wouldn't say who told her (makes me think it's just her!), and she wouldn't have the physio or vet look at her when she came out to my horse because she said it was too expensive for a horse that couldn't be ridden

Havnt got a horsey mum so this would never come up for me, but id be really angry, is the pony in your name? If so tell her shes not allowed to touch your pony else your calling the police lol
 
Coiuldnt you advertise her as a non-ridden companion pony. We have a non ridden companion on loan and there are often adverts for people looking for a companion. I presume your mum wants someone to look after/pay for he upkeep?
 
no, she doesn't want anyone looking after or paying for her upkeep, just someone to give her a little more attention where she is, she loves fuss and as neither my sister or I are around during the week and my mum doesn't have time she doesn't get a proper groom except at weekends. She just doesn't seem to be able to understand that she shouldn't be ridden. My mum's not horsey so doesn't really understand that side of things
