i have just heard from my parents that my horse who is on loan to our neighbours choked on his feed the other day and had to have the vet out. if it was your horse would you expect the loanee's to call you and tell you? i was just wondering if i should phone and find out exactly what happened from what i've been told hes fine now but i'm a little worried about it him. i miss my boy and theres not much i can do 300 miles away but i would like to be kept informed it just makes me wonder what else they wouldnt tell me about am i being over protective?

I have a broodmare on loan and I'm probably of the annoying variety - if something goes wrong I like them to know - not for the sake of badness but if you've had to call a vet then it's obviously slightly serious. I'd like to know so I think you should phone.

did they go and tell you parents? if they did i would of thought they have told you in a round about way. if they didn't i would be p**s off

no they didnt tell my parents they casually mentioned it to my non horsey doesnt give a s**t about anything brother while he was at work who said to my parents they had a vet out he choked or something. i guess they did sort of pass it on but my parents would have been a better bet

To be fair, your loanees probably think your brother is more er....functional as a relayer of messages than he is

I suspect they probably didn't want to worry you - as your horse is fine. It sounds as though they are caring loaners, who actually bothered to get the vet to look after your boy.
If you are worried, phone them - and say you had some garbled story from your brother....ask them to call you in future.

yeh i guess thanx for your replys i know they look after him really well and i'm really lucky with them as they are happy for me to have a ride on him when i'm home something i know and is understandably something that doesnt happen often with loaners. i'll give them a call later on as they are probably out at work just now

I wouldn't worry too much, he's on loan to them, they called the vet (did the sensible thing). The choking had more than likely stopped before the vet even arrived. My silly pony's choked before - he used to do it a lot as he bolted his food! usually, if just on normal food/hay they sort themselves pretty quick, it's not pleasant to watch mind!

When mine was on loan I wouldn't have expected the loaner to contact us if they'd had a vet out unless it was very very serious to be honest. He did jump a fence to get to a mare when they had him, they put him back and he did it again but this time he didn't quite make it and sliced his shoulder open. From what i know they didn't call us as wasn't life threatening but required stitches. They left him with the mare after that! (we do suspect he's a rig as jumping a fence on his own accord was V out of character!!!)
