I stable my horse at livery yard very nice it is but my stable happen to have a big crack down the front wall of his box was about all morning and it just apeared never hered horse kick it/ knock it , yard owner has had 4 wall come down and never billed any one for them (Luckly no horses ever been hurt) but has said i will need to pay for the repair on mine i feel this is why you pay your livery money and stables sould be fit for the purpose and maintained for this just wondered what others think and would you pay the bill as dont belive my horse was to blame thanks

i can understand your frustration, but, its your horse that has caused the damage and unless you have signed a contract saying they will repair the damage of your horse or they have insurance or praps you have insurance,,, them im afraid you are liable, i feel, for the repair costs imo!!! I always repair what my horse breaks as a livery always have done in the past, but have to say am really lucky where iam now they just go round fixing stuff, and as soon as something gets broken they fix it

which is fantastic and i know im one of the lucky ones not all yards do this.

If my horse had caused the damage, I'd expect to have to pay to have it repaired! However, how you prove or disprove that it was your horse that caused the damage if the yard has had other stable walls collapse (!) I don't know!

This is the dilemer as was there when it happened and horse was no where near front wall, dont think they have been built very well. Will pay for any damage my horse causes but feel this wasnt his fault and surly four other walls actualy falling down means bad build in first place and why only start charging now?

(Rules of one and not four others)

I would not pay as a livery, and wouldn't expect a livery to pay me as a YO - you pay livery, a bit different than rent, wear and tear should be YO's problem, not yours.

I agree with this.

I have a barn of 16 stables that over the years have suffered wear and tear but 2 years ago we had a builder come in and rebuild/repair all the stables so now I know that if any damage happens it is down to the horses in there and charge accordingly. I had an instance the other day where a pony was tied up outside a stable had a fight with the horse in the stable and ended up by breaking the door pillar which of course had to be repaired and paid for.

Difficult if you have no contract that states who is responsible.

Ours states that we 'may' be asked to pay for or contribute to repairs but nine times out of ten the YO fixes things or is very happy if we offer to do a repair ourselves.

For the safety of your horse I would offer to contribute to the cost or suggest you do the repair yourself.

It does worry me slightly that your yard seems to be falling down.
