A week ago a new horse appeared in a field alongside the road on my way to work- lovely looking bay cob type. I have only seen his owner once as I went past (the day he arrived).

Now whilst he's obviously cared for and looked to every day(due to neck cover being on and off and water/ feed buckets), every time I've gone past his rug has been done up very loosely and the surcingles attached directly across and not crossed over. Likewise the legstraps are not looped through each other. His field is on top of an exposed hill and we are in a very windy area.

I'm concerned that he is going to injure himself if his rug slips and every time I go past I'm tempted to leave a note on the gate but don't want to come across as an interfering busybody. My gut instinct is to leave a note but not sure how the owner would take it. Speaking to a couple of horsey friends here, they think best to leave alone as they would feel very put out if a stranger left a note on their gates but they are seasoned horse owners who know what they're doing.

So, as above- what would you do?

Leave it, the horse's welfare isn't compromised and it's obviously being checked. There could be a very good reason - if someone left a note on my field about something quite so trivial I would be fuming.

I think I would leave the note. Telling them what you think isn't actually interfering with anything and its up to them if they listen or ignore you. It might annoy them, it might help. Would it matter if you annoyed them?

If it concerns you that much just leave a note, its not like they will know its from you, they can either screw it up and think someone is interferring and call you some rude name

or actually think...orrrh yes they have a point...either way no harms done.

Either that or just let it go and stop looking at the horse, otherwise your going to be tempted to check on everything on a daily basis and pick up on every other thing they don't do.

i wouldn't touch horse! u can get done for trespassing for starters and how do u know this horse will let u interferer with its back straps without a boot??? if i came and found someone had messed with my horse i was be fuming!

leave a note saying u don't want to interfere but having this like this can cause a accident like this kind advice most people will take or wait till u see owner and speak to her direct say it in a round about way.

Thanks for the responses- i think Walrus is prob right- it is a minor thing and none of my business. I shall leave well alone.

Flame- it wouldn't bother me whether she got mad or not as I don't know her but prob best to keep out of it!

ETA:
Vicjip: I would never dream of going and sorting it myself- I think that would be overstepping the mark somewhat! If I see the owner about i might go and introduce myself like Michelleice says and bring it up that way though...
