Just interesting to hear what different people would or wouldnt do if they witnessed on a livery yard somebody beat their horse. Would you say something or keep your mouth shut ? I'm not saying this happened i'm just intregued to know what people would or wouldnt do?

Depends if it weas realy being beaten or just a good telling off. If a horse was being beaten I would probably say something to the owner and the yard owner.

Sometimes people can misread a situation. When my daughter first got her cob she was a bit in your face and no respecter of personal space. OH was quite alarmed when he saw her spin round and roar/wave her arms to send her out of her personal space without warning one day. We had quite a long conversation about how ther can be no grey areas when you are talking about 750kg of horse! Said cob is now an absolute gem and wouldnt dream of being rude

Not sure really - depends on what the horse did I suppose, but beating a horse is not going to get you anywhere anyway so pretty pointless.

I told a kid off at my yard the other day for continually jabbing her pony in the mouth whilst lungeing in a bridle with the lungeline attached just to one side of the bit.

She was actually trying to get the pony to go faster - um, yes.....

Her mum (YO) though gave me the dirtiest look so I vowed to do three things - never to get involved, never to ask them to touch my animals and to leave the yard at the earliest opportunity....

In my opinion it depends what was happening and in what context.
I am no supporter of hitting a horse.
I am on a yard that deals with natural horsemanship and i am well aware that this method is NOT suitable for all characters of horses.
There are horses out there that are down right dangerous and need dominating otherwise will end up being put down...
Im not talking a beating but a good telling off is sometimes in order.

As i said, it depends what was happening as sometimes things are too far.

When I say beaten I mean like wacked over the head on several occasions with a feed scoop and then shouting and wacking continuing for the next 20mins

That does sound excessive! Everyone has different definitions of beating. I dare say half the people on my yard think I beat my horse last night, as she was attempting to kick my head in while I was treating her mudfever... (I didn't, but she did get a couple of slaps and a bit of a shouting at). But 20 mins of being shouted at and hit with a feed scoop. No, that's beating. Especially around the head.

Difficult to get involved though. I would probably go to YO and see if they could have a word.

Get my animals the hell off that yard- if that happens in front of people i dread to think what happens when no one is around!

What had the horse done?

Don't mind a nudge or a little 'OY' slap but if I'd witnessed that I would have dragged them away from the animal and I'd like to think I would be adult and calm enough to tell them to calm the hell down and think about their actions...but more likely I'd take the shovel and wrap it around their head. NO excuses for treating an animal in that manner, if you can't communicate effectively without resorting to violence then animals are not the hobby for you.

Oh jezzzz is the horse not a nervous wreck?!!! Theres a girl on our yard and her horse kicked the door so she got a whip went into the stable and gave it a couple of whacks and continued this everytime it kicked the door. Everytime it seen the whip it ran to the back of the stable!! We said nothing as her mum gave her a head chewing!! ... My sister was once riding our horse and she gave him a smack on the arse and one livery said to her "omg why did you just hit him thats cruel!!" I replyed " He wasnt listening so he got a smack" no point in sitting and nagging and getting nowhere when one smack can sort it out. Id hate to see her reaction to a horse being beat with a feed scoop!!

That's just dreadful, i couldn't have stood back. i would have intervened and taken her weapon away (perhaps giving her a clout with it). Did nobody stop her? I would have then spoken to the yard owner afterwards too.

Hmm, see I dont think thats awful ... its so annoying a horse constantly banging its door. So long as she wasnt really hitting him hard and its was a flat (e.g jumping/racing not schooling) whip, then i dont think its such an awful thing (obviously dependant on the backgound/charecter of the horse). Mine used to do it, but we have a little dog who gives him a fair telling off if he bangs the door - hes more scared of the dog than a whip!

**hides, getting ready to be told that im an evil horse beating witch** :p

Lol i really do hate horses banging the door so to prevent mine doing it i used to just leave the door open and let him stand over a chain. When mine done it i used to just boot the door back at him (yes i looked like a mad person but its good to take the frustration out on the door :p). The only problem i had with it was the pony is only 4 and all it was doing was scaring it ... although she did stop it when the pony reared on her and her mum gave her a mouthful!! We had a discussion with the same person a couple of weeks later about bargy horses and beating and she said she didnt believe in hitting horses!! Needless to say me and my friend looked a bit bemused :p
