I'm about to reloacte abroad. To a bigger house with land! it's amazing. My dilema is what to do with my horse. Some of me thinks I should sell him and some of me doesn't know if I can. Head says he should go as the house is pretty remote and has lots of work to do, so it'll be a while before I can keep another there and I can't afford to pay livery meanwhile.

Others have said loan him, but I wonder if it's easier to make a clean break??

Has anyone ever had problems believing anyone else could love their horse as much as they do. he's a super horse to have, so i'm sure selling wouldn't be an issue, but would I regret it???

I think that all the time, i know it's not true but I believe no one could love my horses as much as I do!!!

Think everyone feels like that.
I'd put him on long term loan say two years, explain that you may well want him back after that time but buying him could be an option if all parties are happy with that and you feel you could permanently let him go.

What is the country, is it particularly horse friendly ? As I am never likely to move abroad it is an impossible question for me. But I do know I would have been just as unhappy to loan my horse, as to sell her, unless I knew the person taking her personally. I think you might as well sell, because a loan home is not permanent enough for you, when you will be living abroad. You will find it hard to check on the horse or deal with problems. If it is a young horse, you could consider placing it in a grass livery situation for a year and just bring it over when you are ready.

Without wishing to belittle the affection you obviously have for your horse... if you have got this far without having a plan for him then you'll probably find someone who cares about him just as much.

I've known a few people relocate with their horses... and for some (but not all!) they wouldn't even have considered taking the new job/study position if the horse couldn't go with.

Your life sounds like it is moving on and you're not taking the horse into consideration as an integral part of that.

Plenty of nice homes out there that you could find for him.

Best of luck with the new start.

Are you sure you can't take the horse with you? Of course it depends on where you are relocating to, but we moved to France with 4 horses and had no problems. To start off with we had no fencing, but we now have the fields fenced, stables and an arena so we're getting there. If he were mine I would look into getting a small companion for him and then taking both with me. All you need to start off with is electric tape and posts!
