What would you do?

I need some advice on what to do. I've only had my 3yr old for 2 weeks and I have noticed he has started to become a bit nippy this past week. So I thought nothing more of it and put it down to him being young and maybe teething.

Then the other day I brought him in and went off to do the field. I come back onto the yard and found the YO and her daughter with hands full of treats treating him at his door. They seemed really pleased with themselves and said look we've got him to eat treats (the first week he didn't know what they are).

Basically I'm doing all the ground work with him at the moment walking in hand, halting, standing up square, getting feet up & picked out etc (you get the idea). I only treat him when he has done something I have asked of him as a reward (this is only 1 treat not a handful).

Am I over reacting or do I say something to them. I don't want to make things awkward on the yard as they have their horse & I see them everyday. But at the same time I don't want my horse to get nippy.

He's your horse - if you don't want him fed treats, then he shouldn't be fed treats. Explain to them why you don't want him fed treats - nappy, training etc - and they will probably listen to you and apologise.

I hate people interfering with my pony but diplomacy and a nice word often works wonders
 
I'd ask them nicely and explain why. I have the same problem with mine, if he's fed treats he gets nippy, no treats no nippy, simples! The yard I'm on know the rules so it's working well :D
 
I am going to say something and it will be polite. But I think they will take it the wrong way. They seem the type of people 'I'm right your wrong'. I hate it when people start to poke their noses into other peoples business :mad:
 
I had this problem - only it was my lami pony being fed carrots :mad:
I was so mad & put a note on his door saying:
'Please do not feed this pony he is recovering from laminits, thanks'

I wasn't sure who it was on the yard but i had an idea!:rolleyes:
The only way i knew was by finding bits of carrot on his stable floor day after day.

It worked!:D

You could just tell them that you'll be using treats for training so he can't have treats at any other time to maintain the effectiveness of them as an aide during training sessions...:)
