where i keep my horses at DIY we have allocated fields, the fields are not full so this allows lots of selection about which horses go out together.
my 2 are kept just in a pair, there a 2 groups of fields within 1-5 mins of the yard and 2 separate fields 20 mins from yard.
nobody uses the fields furthest away except me-i have a 'winter' field closer to the yard but this year have used one of the further fields so my other filed can rest and i will have grass in the winter.
there are 3 other empty fields but today i go to put my friends horse out and see someone has put their three horses in my winter field, their field is bare but thats not my problem they can do the long walk like i do for some grass surely?
i do some services on the yard so do handle these horses from time to time and as this is the second time she has done this this year (last time she left my field completely bald and i did ask her not to turn out in there again) so i caught them put them back in her field and put a chain and padlock on my gate
we don't have a yard manager and the owners are clueless about horses and yard management so no-one in charge to make rules.
what would you have done?

I'd have left the horses where they were to be honest.

Unless you have a signed contract stating these fields are yours, then this sort of thing is always liable to happen.

What a nightmare.

if i left them there i would have to move yard for winter, which would be a huge problem, no-one has a written contract on the yard which is a problem. The yard owners refer to fields by the name of the owner of the horses that are in it and said i could have that one as my daughters horse has to be out at night all year round and the others are not suitable as one or two of the geldings are upset by have mares turned out near them. so she could have moved into any one of 3 big fields but i can only use that one

there is so much grazing there but you have to walk to get to it and i am the only one who bothers.

i do the worming programme for the yard and go and do all the horses for people who cant get there in the snow, its a big yard 60+ stables with 80 acres of grazing, have been there 8yrs and she has been there 5 months really has riled me tbh

Well, perhaps she wasn't aware this was your field.

Perhaps the way forward is to have placards made up for each field, with the name of the person for whom it is reserved.

i gave her the benefit of the doubt when she put then in there in july, her new gelding was not settling and he had to moved from field to field a couple of times as he was kicking others, so she popped them in my field unknowingly, we had a chat and i said if she wanted to leave them there till mid august to give him a chance to settle that was fine, but i needed it rested from then or it would be a wrecked field for the winter.
she was fine with that and said thanx for being so helpful (everyone else just wanted him out of their fields) so i did the nice bit and now i think she is taking the pee

60 horse yard with 80 acres in Chelmsford... I'm intrigued, I can't think of any which really fit your description...

near south woodham, has capacity for 60+ but never full to capacity, to run down for that!
keep guessing:D

maybe not quite 80 acres the whole farm is 128acres i believe and some has been planted with trees

This ^^

Suggest this to the YO, or ask if you can do this for them, you sound as if you have taken on the unofficial mantle of YM :)

Having the free pick of fields seems to be just asking for bun fights when grass gets a bit short

Which is why I say what goes where, with whom, and when on my yard ;) :D With capacity for 60 horses I would have every paddock listed, for my sake as well as the Owners. People, as well as horses, are much happier when they know where they stand.

there is someone on the yard we all want to be YM (not me, i work with horses elsewhere) she knows her stuff and is sensible and fair, but YO have undermined her so often and wont pay her (they wont pay anyone or let them have a stable or 2 rent free) so she is now going back to work elsewhere, its really frustrating, the YO will ask for advice and then say, 'i do not want to get involved', thats the main reason i have put a lock on my gate as she will just wash her hands of it-if there was nowhere else for the other womans horses to go i could understand it but there is, she is just being lazy.

In a fit of self-righteous fury I would probably have done what you did...

(....then spent all day worrying about it, and only gone back to the yard under cover of darkness:o)

you know i have not heard anything and they were not up the yard tonight, so they have not been up to check on their horses today neither has anyone else!

and yes i did worry
