I don't actually have a choice btw but just out of interest! I have a 'quirky' horse who previously would only be caught by me. Recently got a sharer who usually manages to get him ok.

Came down with the flu on xmas eve, and been bed ridden since as it has gone into my chest and badly affected my asthma :( Horse has picked this time to not catch and has been out now for the past three days without catching, without feed etc. He is clearly fine as has spent about an hour a day running away from my poor sharer and others lol but he'll just have to fend for himself until he decides to catch or I am fit to go outside.

He runs in a big herd in a large field with natural shelter and a reasonable amount of grass considering the time of year. He'll lose weight but wont drop dead.

Would the rest of you admit defeat too?

Pointless post but ill and feeling sorry for myself and angry with him!

Hope you get well soon, theres nothing worse!

If it was me I would leave him be, sounds like he has all he needs for now and as long as someone checks he is ok then I would be happy with that. He may do more harm than good running around when its so slippy..

I'd leave him out and not feel remotely guilty. Good for your sharer for persevering for an hour at a time!

Get well soon.

Is he related to my mare ? She also runs with a herd in 20 acres and when she decided the other night that she wanted to be persuaded to come in, I decided to let the responsibility for this decision with her and left her in the field.

24 hours later, she virtually shoved her head in the headcollar, having worked out that her choice wasn't so smart.

Your horse will be fine for a few days, otherwise he'd be mugging anyone with a headcollar.
