What would you do?

but you can't just decide yo're jumping so have priority over the school at a fairly prime time (7pm when a lot of working people ride) regardless if you say you're jumping. I would go up later or ask everyone if they thought the yard should have bookable half hours for jumping as you didn't want to freak their horse out (therefore making you sound less like someone who expects to have the arena to themselves-which you are not going to get at livery)

I really don't expect to have the arena to myself, to me you go into the school to work your horse not stand in a corner to chat especially at this time of year anyway, it's too cold for that! You are saying everyone has a right to be in the school and yes you are completely right but that means i am completely right to jump my horse if i want to. I am not sure if booking the school would go down well as they may feel i'm trying to change the rules of there yard? I will probably have to end up coming in the morning before work on days i want to jump

Is the arena too small for you to be jumping in there with other people? Our arena's about 30 x 60 and I'd have no problem doing some schooling or jumping without interfering with people stopped at one end. I don't think you know the yard's unwritten rules and understandings but it would be nice of you to try to fit in and to work with them rather than expecting the regulars to change to suit you and your program.

The schools not overly big, it will be ideal when the indoor is finished! If it was big enough for me not to have this problem I wouldn't be having a wee rant about it. I'm really not trying to/expecting the regulars to change there program to suit me at all I don't know how many times I need to say it. I work with horses and after work I like to go and get mine ridden and sorted and go home. All I'm wanting is for them to have some common sense if they are coming in the school to stand and chat they might as well do it outside the school or if they were to keep working away it would be grand and it's really only once a week I jump at home! Now I feel like I'm being ratty and I am not meaning to be!

absoloutely- you can jump your horse but don't expect to be able to use every bit of the arena to do so-expect to have to work round other people no matter whether they come in before, after or during your schooling. I personally wouldn't stand around on the horse chatting but for some people its an important part of their horse. Tbh - you are expecting them to change their program-you want them to stop having their chats which is their program, they may not want to work continuously. Alternatively, don't livery for a couple ofwinters and you can probably build your own school. I'm afraid on group yards those jumping and those schooling/chatting have to work around each other unless you have a booking system. You could approahc it as 'I'm sorry x spooked your horse the other day, are you happy enough for us to continue sharing the arena or should we come up with a booking system for when I'm jumpiong so as not to upset your horse?*

As i keep saying i'm not expecting to have the use of every bit of the arena i'm well aware that thats not possible, but maybe you are right maybe i am expecting them to change there program by finding a way to politely ask them to move off the track even it's for there own safety and mine, i don't want to fall out with any of them and i'm not sure how a booking system would go down with them? Maybe it's just me that has this problem, i work at pro/am sj yard with livieries and never have this problem everyone works away fine and if someone is jumping they stay out of the way, i'm maybe just to used to that way of working. If i didnt livery then i wouldn't be able to ride(bar weekends, which i am normally at a show) as its dark when i'm done. I have been saving over the past few years to get my own school and hoping that i will be able to get it built next summer

Afraid I agree with OP. It's bad manners to hang about on the track and chat when schooling time is precious. If you were at a SJ comp the stewards would probably move people on who did that. But as you are at livery and need to keep the peace I would just ask if they minded keeping the track free for a short while for safety reasons.

I really don't understand why people do this. I just carry on schooling regardless and say 'watch out' or 'left to left!' as I pass. But then hanging about chatting isn't really tolerated here when people are schooling. We often chat AS we are schooling, but I certainly wouldn't stop and use my horse as an armchair.

However OP I do agree with the person who said its generally not good etiquette to jump with others in the school. I would try to find another time, realistically you should only need to jump once a week, particularly if you're competing at the weekends, so on that day I'd just get up earlier personally.

Thanks horsemadmum1, This is what i'm thinking surely it's not to much bother to ask that and as i keep saying i just don't want to fall out with them over it.

I wish it wasn't tolerated here as well, well yeh thats completely different i often chat while walking around cooling off/warming up etc. but you are still keeping out of the way of the other users. I am only ever jumping once a week at home if i'm not away for a lesson that is. Its not as if i'm the only one thats jumping there and i said this before if someone else is jumping then i wait until they are finished, but if someone comes in to jump when i'm already in it doesn't bother me i just keep working away. The only thing that annoys me is when they are all standing chatting and showing no inclination of moving so i can get on with what i'm trying to do. You are probably right though the day i'm planning to jump i will probably be best going up before work!

Good lord lol! Just ask them if they mind you jumping in the evenings and would they mind clearing the arena so you can. All this trying to rearrange your whole schedule just because you are scared to ask them to move. I sometimes think I'm from another planet :biggrin3:

Lol, you get such mixed opinions about it, i have never seen it as bad ettiquette to jump while there's other people in the arena, maybe its because i work at a sj yard and its the norm. Then reading some of the opinions on here i seem to be in the wrong for wanting to ask them to move(politely of course) while i am trying to jump. I have tried the subtle approach, so maybe if i ask them as in reality its for everyones safety at the end of the day and if that doesn't work then morning riding it is! Roll on summer!
