Hi all,any advice appreciated...
I moved my mare to a new yard yesterday.at her old yard she was turned out with another mare and a gelding..anyway one day in the sand paddock my mare got into a fight with the other mare(think they were both in season)and the result was a nasty gash in the other mares leg:(
Since then I have kept her on her own in the field...a couple of months went and the yard owner bought a little gelding, she put him in the field with my mare and they got on really well.
The new yard has 2 fields, one for horses that come in at night and one for horses that stay out 24 hours in summer...I wanted to put her out in the 24 hour field but it is a mixed herd and as she is quite a dominant mare I am worried that she will end up in a fight again.
The yard owner said I can fence off a section with electric fencing if I wanted to but I cannot afford all that kit right now and I hate it that I feel I have to keep her separated from the others.
What do you suggest I do?

I think mixed turnout can work even with a dominant horse it depends how big the field is and with how many horses, I have a gelding that can be very dominant and is always the boss wherever I have kept him, but a few years back I kept him on mixed turnout in a 25 acre field with about 17 other horses and he was fine they all had plenty of room and although he still ruled the roost they all had there pecking order.

I am not a great lover of multiple turnout in sand areas I think they tend to get bored and start on each other, as they don't have grass to eat and they tend to be very small areas for horses so difficult for them to have there own space, how big is the field you want to put her in and with how many horses?

hi there pinkyboots, thanks for replying,
you know you may be right,i did wonder myself that it could just have been because they were in the sand paddock together,it was winter as the fields were boggy and she has never shown aggression towards other horses previously, and both mares got on with each other.
as for the field it is a substantial size, not been to see how many horses are in it yet but there is plenty of room.
i am just fretting that she may hurt somebody elses horse,i am not worried about her she can hold her own,but shes as stubborn as they come(being a welsh!! lol) and if confronted will not back down and is also very mareish when in season, especially at the start of spring.
mwaaa might just have to suck it up and hold my breath!!
but dont want a vets bill and an angry mob of owners on my hands:(

If you have to end up turning her out with the others can you remove her back shoes until she settles down so that if she does get into a fight then she will do less damage.
Must be a worry for you.

Oldie48..no there is no system for introducing there is only 2 fields one for day turnout and one for 24 hour turnout.
Solve..she does not wear shoes:)
