My horse is 10, I’ve owned him since he was 5. Since I got him he has always suffered with gastric ulcers. I unknowingly bought him with ulcers and not matter what I do they always come back. He has had a full veterinary check, lameness assessment, checks for arthritis, etc
He’s a stressy horse in general and has now developed asthma and is now showing signs of gastric ulcers for the 5th time. I’ve maxed out his insurance and ulcers treatment is getting way too much for me.
Vets can’t understand why he keeps getting ulcers and now on top he’s got this asthma

Am I in the wrong of thinking to putting him to sleep? I can’t afford another field ornament and if he’s constantly getting ulcers but vets can’t seem to find any issue with him I don’t know what else I can do.

must add - he’s in barely any work at the moment, always has hay left in the morning, always fed chaff before we do ride, never left without a friend

Putting to sleep is never a wrong decision if you cannot afford the treatment and the horse is never going be able to do a job. Those who do not have to pay out may tell you different.
It’s just constant ulcers and no one can figure out why. The treatment is around £800 each time which doesn’t include the scope
I’m just at my wits end and I love this horse to absolute pieces, I have him tattooed on my arm lol
But I don’t know what else to do and not do the vets and I really can’t just keep a field ornament

Have you tried anything apart from vet treatment? Equibiome recommendations have turned around many horses i know (including 2 of mine) and Alex Geudon (facebook) is having some impressive results with her advice.

One of mine is naturally stressy and he’s been kept on sucralfate long term after treating for ulcers, might be worth asking your vets about. It works out at about 100 a month which isn’t terrible in terms of supplements.

We tried sucralfate when he first had ulcers, they didn’t do anything for him unfortunately and only gastroguard helped

I’ve tried all the supplements out there, I will check out equibiome.
Latest supplement we are trying is ponease

It’s an awful lot of money to keep spending whilst knowing it probably won’t work. Ulcers are painful and if there is no fixable reason to be found and your management is good, which it sounds like it is then I’d be putting to sleep aswell.
