A 15.2 to 17hh low level eventer. Age not necessarily important. To compete BE90/100 preferably competitive at that level.. would be lovely if had the scope for more but not a necessity. Must be nice easy sort...safe and will jump off any stride and not get offended type.

That's gold dust I have described isn't it!

How much would you expect to pay?

You be lucky and find one at five and you should find one at ten I would be thinking at 5 to 15 if I where looking .
The age will affect the price that cv at six will cost more than a 12 yo 'topped out ' horse .

I'm a serial window shopper and this the hypothetical horse I search for - well up to 90 for me as I have no desire to go higher. I'm always surprised at the range of prices for this sort. I've seen some as cheap as 4k and some as expensive as 15k. Whether the 4k ones have flaws or are under priced and whether the 15k ones are too expensive, only the real buyers will be able to judge after seeing them.

I'd say £5k-£8k. A friend recently brought an 8 yr old Connie x TB for this sort of thing who is a lovely sort (And I usually am not a Connemara or TB fan!) for £5k reduced down from £7.5k with all of her tack. Absolutely nothing wrong with her and she sailed through a 5 stage vetting but had been for sale for months. She was however located in Aberdeen which we think is why she hadn't sold as is the back of beyond for a lot of people (I live in Surrey so that puts that into perspective) but my friend travelled up to see her, had a day of doing a bit of everything with her as the owners knew how far she had come from and then had to go back to collect her. If you are willing to travel, there are some fantastic bargains to be had as my friend would definitely have had a reduced choice for her budget down here in the South East.

It's what I bought earlier this year though looks like he will go at last to Novice. Mine was towards the higher end of what is being discussed. If you can move slightly outside of what most people want (so the 6-8 16.2 bay gelding) you will have more choice. Mine clocks in at 17 or 17.1 so was bypassed but has proven to be one of the nicest horses ever. Equally, I might not have looked at a horse that big, having overhorsed myself previously when my baby ISH went into huge spurt mode and grew a big opinion at the same time! I went to a good dealer, saw a couple...and fell in love with mine over the door. Best purchase ever.

If you want one that will be comfortable at 90/100, with the odd placing if the stars align then around 5k, if you want something that will be very competitive i.e. A decent chance of getting to badminton grassroots you will be paying a lot more!! It's rare to find horses that are consistent in all 3 phases so the ones that are are expensive! It's important to decide if success at 90/100 or scope to go higher is more important to you unless you do have a really big budget.

My question is where are they!! All i want is 16.3+ (so larger than average) horse preferably not in its mid teens to event BE80/90 comfortably/RC and low level affiliated BD and BS. Preferably something that has actually done something other than just popped a log out hacking and has potential aged 12!

I have more than this to spend and more - have a budget of upto £7k but crikey its like looking for hens teeth. I am hoping its this time of year and things will improve in the new year. Seen the odd one but they have all involved a 10 hour round trip and this is rather off putting. Will have to wait or get desperate than driving all that way seems a good idea.

A friend bought a lovely well bred 6 year old just over a year ago, he's really super, does a fab dressage test and pops round 90/100s with ease has had a number of placings including a couple of 1sts at BE100. He'd been with a professional who had decided he wasn't going to go advanced so was of no interest. She paid 7.5K and he was cheap because he's 17.2 but he'd been very well schooled for his age and had immaculate manners. He's ready to go novice next season and I guess he's doubled in value.

Me too and I'd agree with this. Young and green with potential towards the lower end, more established proven ones at the top end. Fairly big variation within the range though as the market is all over the shop these days ! And yes, hens teeth next to the gold dust round the corner from the unicorn haha.
