Got my 16hh horse coming back of loan tomorrow. When he went on loan 18 months ago he went with a band new bridle (Only had it on a hand full of times), saddle and 2 turnout rugs. I understand these items have been used for the last 18months so won't be in the same condition as they went in but what would you say is an acceptable condition to return them in? I know one of the rugs has a rather big hole in it and last time I saw the bridle it was covered in scratches where he had rubbed it on the wall. Any thoughts???

Well, it's a difficult one, if the horse rubbed it on the wall, you can't really say the loaner wasn't taking care of it (different if she'd never looked after it in all that time and it came back clearly not taken care of). Horse damaging it would probably come under wear and tear - as would the rug situation.
If everything was clean and clearly well looked after, if a little worn and the horse looked good I'd be happy to let it slip.

Different matter if it comes back dirty, and clearly not looked after and the horses care hasn't been up to much either.

If the saddle and bridle have been well looked after (which they ought to have) they will come back not much different to when they left. If the horse has scratched the bridle....not much you can do i'm afraid.
Same with the rugs....if the horse has ripped them its a case of tough...however if I were the loaner the rugs would have been coming back cleaned and mended.
As BDC says.....main priority is the horse comes home happy and healthy.

when my mare came back from loan, her saddle had marks where the loaner hadn't pulled down the girth guards but apart from that saddle looked okay (probably not as clean as I would have liked) ;) - think you just have to accept some wear and tear!

I packed my pony off with 8 rugs and got two back (apparently the others broke) - (loaners, your probably on here, so hope your ponies are enjoying my girlies rugs)! - sorry OP not bitter at all :D and very wise to only send your horse with two rugs!

Hope the horse and your equipment gets returned to you in good condition! :)

I had a very lovely loaner, she kept my pony absolutely as I would have myself, and she broke in my newish saddle so it was far more comfortable on return. I also got two NEW rugs, a Rambo and a Wug, PLUS a waterproof blanket for hacking in.

TBH I would hope for bonuses rather than the opposite if you had a caring loaner. Hope all is well for the return.
