Hi,

Im just wanting to get some peoples ideas on what they would feed my horse? Im happy with what he is (I think) It seems to do him well. But out of interest I thought I'd ask......

What would you feed a 16.1hh TBxWelsh nearly 17 years old. used for hacking and general school work, occasional jumping/lateral work. Out on grass all day, and most nights now (depending on weather) as doesnt like being in?

....?

Well that would depend on whether he was a good doer or not and whether he fizzes up or is sensitive to certain feed ingredients etc.

yeah sorry, not a real good do'er and can fiz up. He is on Alpha light, dobson and horrel senior mix, sugabeet(at the moment) and some good old cubes.

If he is Tbx welsh, depending on which he takes after - good doer or bad doer, then it depends. For a horse out 24/7 and a good doer with native breeding I would say nothing really, unless he needs any supplements for condition/age related things? If he is a poor doer, then maybe some allen and page old faithful mix?

In that case, I'd probably feed him Spiller's Response Slow Release Cubes, along with Alfa A Oil and/or unmollassed sugar beet. Obviously alongside as much good quality hay/haylage as he can eat until the grass is properly through.

All three will supply calories from fibre and oil, rather than giving him high levels of sugars and cereals which could potentially fizz him up.

I'd then weigh tape him on a regular basis to see whether he is losing, maintaining or gaining weight, and would then adjust the feeding accordingly.

I would feed alfalfa and unmollassed sugar beet with a conditioning cube rather than a mix, as cubes usually have less starch. having said that even cheap basic cubes can have 20% starch. It depends on the cereal content and whether they have been cooked. Topspec cool condition cubes are very low in starch (6% i think) and cereal free so good for weight gain without fizziness. An alternative is a high oil feed such as badminton triple top or coolstance.

Thanks, the sugabeet he is on is actually speediebeet, although I must say im not to happy with it.

He is more TB than welsh, and takes most traits of a TB condition wise. I just want something to keep his weight on and keep good general health. I used to work with him when I was at college so I know him pretty well. I have recently brought him off the college and moved him to my yard. and you can see a bit of a difference in his weight already, I think some of it is stress. but I want to make sure I have the best feed for his needs.

If I could answer the question with a good answer I would. lol. I've used it for a year, and I still prefer the 24hr stuff, I used that for years. it doesnt seem to smell the same?? is that just me? Its nothing really to do with what is does for the horse. I think its me set in my ways lol.

The normal sugar beet probably smells sweeter because it is 20% sugar, as opposed to Speedibeet's 5% sugar!

Very more than likely has something to do with it.
